Sincerely, these flares are awful for a camera this price.
I know flares are normal to a certain extent, I understand it... but what the hell is this?
It comes from all directions. I really might just send this camera back from where it came from.
Wish it wasn't this bad.

Hi there, thank you for bringing this to our attention and we apologize for the inconvenience. In regard to your issue, when recording non-diving scenes, you can try removing the lens cover, which can significantly reduce the impact of the flare. This might help improve the image quality. If you continue to experience issues, please let us know, and we'll be happy to assist further. Thank you for your understanding and support.

I've seen someone else's video without the lenses cover and the trumpet flare was indeed gone.
The thing is, they should think it through because other action cams do not have this type of flare, so if it is because of it why would this lens design be approved in the first place?
Also today during my testing I noticed that sometimes there's contrast changes that are so abrupt that it's ridiculous.
Ex : getting out of a forest to a open area.
I'll have to seriously reconsider this action cam and think If I'll trade for either the 4 or Ace Pro 2.
I'm disappointed.

What I'm really interested in is whether I can use the FOV boost lens together with the horizon lock. Because with this lens the trumpets have disappeared. Does anyone have experience with this?? Maybe you, Fisch?

then you could kill two birds with one stone with the lens. Firstly, there are fewer trumpets and secondly you have a larger field of view with the horizon-lock

We move around in sometimes very small spaces and it would be good if you could at least set the normal "wide" for the FOV. The normal horizon lock is a bit too little. Since my 12-year-old daughter uses the OA5P, it is a bit better to use the horizon lock because she is not so careful about holding the camera straight.

So you are advising that we remove the only thing that protects the lens from impact, scratches, and other damage??? On an action cam that is supposed to be used in extreme conditions and in water.

What is going to protect the lens then? Why di you sell the camera with a defective lens cover that makes such bad trumpet shape lens flares? GoPro or Insta 360 don't have such bad flares

We understand your concerns and apologize for any confusion caused. When shooting in scenes with strong light sources, such as capturing footage at locations with bright lights at night, filming under indoor lighting, or shooting in direct sunlight, optical refraction and reflection may occur due to the thickness of the lens and its less-than-perfect transparency. Consequently, you may observe "glare" on the screen or in captured images. This is a common optical phenomenon, so please feel confident in using your camera.

It would be better if you stopped replying with these boot-copy-paste templates that insult our intelligence.

There is no concern, as a professional photographer and videographer I know what flares are and why they appear.

The complaints from the people are that the flares on Action 5 and 4 are terrible, distracting and they are ruining the video quality. And it is all because you have a bad quality combo of the glass and protection lens cover.

Once again...the GoPro and Insta 360 don't have any such problems with the flares.

Normal Flares are a common optical phenomenon, ugly distracting trumpet shape flares are due to poor quality.

What you've said. On point.
I am actually sending this camera back, I had high hopes for it, I know it does have potential, but i cannot have a camera with so many flaws as this one, seems like they've sold it out to the public as a prototype or a testing camera, this is not acceptable. The type of glass , lens they use, awful, those flares ruin my shots every time because they are not normal flares, these trumpet flares are ugly.
I am disappointed, I'll buy the Ace Pro 2 instead.

For those who asked the question, there is no horizon lock with the boost lens, there is only horizon balancing with a Narrow FOV ( like with normal lens ) unfortunately.

Hello! Due to the lens process limitations, it is impossible to achieve 100% light transmittance now. Therefore, optical refraction and reflection will occur when light passes through the lens, resulting in the glare issue when capturing photos or videos. This issue was considered by DJI engineers during design.

This issue was considered by DJI engineers during design.

It’s a pity that the engineers didn’t take a photo, see the defined shape of the flare and reject the lens for something else that is a little less defined.

Of course we all know that lenses flare and 100% transmission is impossible,  but how it looks is very important when photographing or videoing. They should really have known better, especially after seeing it in the Action 4 lens.

Because it’s an ‘action cam’ many users don’t necessarily think about which way they’re pointing the camera so again, the engineers ought to have taken that into consideration during the design process.

The  real answer isn't that you get ‘refraction’ in all glass. That's an excuse. It's  more likely that the engineers messed up trying to save money on a camera lens, actually.

Unfortunately. I really had high hopes for the camera, overall it as immense potential.
I love the 3 battery pack case, the fact i can connect two dji mic minis, the camera is sturdy and the quality of the image isn't that bad, but it is completely F*****.... the trumpet flares in my opinion are unjustified, the jumps in contrast or exposure spikes are horrible..
Yeah, I know in the long run (or I want to believe) Dji will adress these issues and solve the problems.. It just might not be on the Action 5 Pro, but on a Action 6... They should not sell to public a camera that looks like a prototype camera running a testing phase.

I did as well, but I’ve decided to move on. I’ve been trying an Ace Pro 2 for the last week and it is actually an improvement on the original Ace Pro which I have.

So I’m going with an Ace Pro2. Better colour and contrast. Really good internal audio. A brilliant zoom. The 8 bit thing doesn’t make any difference …. Not a lot needs doing to the footage out of the camera in all honesty.

I can’t stand the inane replies/excuses for a camera that is basically flawed by the one thing that’s so necessary in a camera …. A lens!

That’s it…. Ace Pro 2 arrived. Connected to app instantly and self registered in 10 seconds. There are changes in comparison to the original, but the in camera sound is one of the biggest. Extremely robust sound from  the camera and tbh, the low light setting is excellent. Close focus is much better too. Up and running in 20 - 30 seconds.

Problem solved! DJI need to have a look at one in readiness for the Action 7. The Action 5 is too flaky with its muted picture and is 'dull' looking by comparison.

Action 4 imo looks better than the Action 5. The 5 HDR seems too strong and mutes everything so that it looks like you’re watching through a net curtain!!

The 360 app by comparison is almost unnoticeable. Completely seamless. Honestly, at the moment, the Ace Pro 2 probably has the nicer video with the least fuss. The 10 bit thing doesn't figure when you don't have that much to do in post anyway.

I think DJI have had enough time now. The lens will never be fixed so I think moving away is the answer. Maybe DJI might be a bit more serious if people actually move away, or they will take the GoPro route!

What really did it for me were the inane ‘bot’ comments. Promises of being passed on and how faults are a ‘normal phenomenom’ as if we’re complete novices who have never used a camera before. I’ve had enough tbh.

There are some great things about the Action cameras but not when there are picture problems. You’re stuck with it on your videos, so that’s it for me now.

I'm sailing down the coast of Portugal and right around Spain and back in March. Can't wait!! The Ace will be with me to video the trip.
