I have observed over a long time that when opening the drag down panel on the RC 2 for my Mini 4 Pro (mainly to start screen recording), a message about Compass calibration required is present. If I disregard it, it never comes up on the screen.
I do of course calibrate. Sometimes it goes quick, other times it takes long (but the icon showing the controller direction is still unstable).
I have refreshed the firmware for both the RC 2 and the Mini 4 Pro using the DJI Assistant 2, but no change. I do see the same behaviour on the RC 2 for my Air 3S as well, but very seldom (and also there, no message on the main screen).
Hi there, thank you for reaching out. Kindly try perform a factory reset and perform a compas calibration in your DJI RC2. Can you please send me a link with instructions how to factory reset the RC 2?
Hi there, kindly refer to the steps shared by user Kikik #4 to perform factory reset in your remote controller. Do not hesitate to contcat us back if there's any further inquiry.
fgange57 Posted at 3-6 14:12
Thank you Kikik. I will do a try (just have to make note of all my settings first, as it has taken some time to adjust them to my liking)
You're welcome
Yeah unfortunately, the controller setting also reset
I also noted my settings, especially the gain and expo, usually I just take screenshots
I am not able to find this setting. The only place I can find anything related to settings is at the Profile at the startup page (and a menu choice called Settings, but in this menu there is no choice called System. Can you please explain where to find it?
Forget it. Found it. You have to drag down from the top (I forgot abut that= :-))

I have now first updated the Fly app (as a new version was available - 1.16.4) and carried out a reset. What I will have to do is to sett all my preferences again and wait until the weather is suitable to fly before I can retest (by the way, I had several flights yesterday where this issue did not appear).
Still, I have not gotten an answer to why the request for compass calibration not pops up on the main screen and have to check in the drop-down menu to see that it is required.

Surprisingly enough, most of the settings were unchanged. I also got a new Fly App update (to 1.16.4) and also a FlySafe update. Now I just have to wait for better weather and do a number of flights to see if the issue have been reduced.

That's good then, the last time I did factory reset was quite a while ago, I reset when I feel the booting start is slow, I know perhaps it is the same after the reset, but I at least got a bit of a placebo effect it may work
I think the calibration compass occurs because you have quite some electronics on you, If I remember correctly you mount some kind action cam on the chest

It's a good thought, but I have tested the compass against both phone and camera (the last is head mounted when I use it), and is has no relevance. To rule it out, I have also tested without any electronics or possible interference nearby, and still this request randomly pops up (but never on the main screen, so if it wasn't for the fact that I always start screen recording before filming, I would not have noticed it. Furthermore, I do not do things differently with my Air 3S, and it is very seldom I see a request to calibrate the compass.
For some days ago, I had to do the calibration round several times, and other times, I barely start the round before I get the message Calibrated. Let's hope it will be better now.
By the way, yesterday, I had four flights and never got any calibration messages. Got a nice video as well :-)

I repeat my question:
Still, I have not gotten an answer to why the request for compass calibration not pops up on the main screen and have to check in the drop-down menu to see that it is required. Unless I go into this menu, I am unaware if the controller compass requires calibration.

I hope so as well
Nice shots too, if I may give a bit of suggestion,
for the aerial drone shot, it is better to try and learn many cinematic drone shots, and just combine in the moment it performs the flight
the continuous shot is good, but it is quite better in FPV gimbal mode, or type FPV drone
Nice shots too, if I may give a bit of suggestion,
Thank you for good suggestions. I have tested the FPV mode, but must admit it really does not live up to it's name. The only time you will get sort of a FPV feeling is when turning quite hard one way and sideways at the same time.

When the controller needs to calibrate the compass, a prompt will appear on the screen. Follow the graphic instructions on the prompt to motion a figure eight “∞” to calibrate the compass.
If the remote controller's compass is normal, no prompts about the calibration steps will be displayed.

yeah I agree on that
basically what I'm saying is the aerial shot is better in a short cutscene, like just a few seconds per cut
the continuous shot is from beginning to end, it almost had no cut, or per cut, it takes a longer shot of more than a minute It is better in fpv mode, just in my opinion
well overall it's just my style to use the drone shot, better do what you like
I do have an example if you want to watch mine

That is exactly my point. The warning does not come up on the screen, only when I go into the pull-down menu. If the compass requires calibration, I expect it to come up on the main screen (as I have seen a couple of times many months ago, but lately the only place this message pops up is under the pull-down menu. An error?

Nice. I see that you like those close encounters. I have had a comment earlier as well on adding more movement, but on that particular video, that was not the intention.
If I understand you (and cinematic moves in general) correctly, this is what I probably should avoid or use more:
Do not fly straight forward unless you are passing straight over the tree tops/water/ground.
Do mainly short scenes.
Avoid paning too fast or without any other movement.
Do more reveals (in any directions).
Make more moves in general.
Believe me, I did cut out a lot in this video, as I rather have too much material before start editing rather than miss something, but I clearly could have reduced it moore. I am constantly trying to improve, and inputs such as yours give me inspiration.
I do though think I was closer on a recent trip;
I also think the reveal of the sunset in the video below also came out good (and in a fact, I was moving all the time when I got above the fog.
Are any of these closer to what you are talking about?
I almost forgot to ask. What kind of FPV drone are you using?
fgange57 Posted at 3-7 08:40

Yes, the purpose of making a video is 'don't bore the audience'
at least in my opinion
therefore the drone shot should be getting more point of interest in what drone is capable
the speed for adrenaline, the aerial shot for a unique perspective, the FPV shot for immersive, the limit is just our imagination
something unusual for others, and how to make them more attached
Kikik Posted at 3-7 10:46

This is also my aim. I do not want to bore the "audience", and I also try different things that I do not see too often.
I did consider a Neo, but since it can't do 4K, I dropped it. I guess (at least on the video you showed) that you use some kind of controller. Are you using the RC 2 for the Mini 4 Pro, Goggles your phone, or something else?

wait, what?
Neo can do 4K, but only 30fps
I chose 1080p because it can 60fps just a bit better in my eye when flying with goggles
I use Mini 4 Pro and Neo,
for the RCs are the RC 2 and Goggles 3 with Motion 3

The only issue with the Goggles is that it legally requires a spotter as you are required to fly VLOS (but if no one looks and no one is around, perhaps not too important? .

I know the law about that, but here the drone law isn't that insanely restrictive
when I fly alone, I pick places where not many people are around, usually in nature, woods, and mountains
if it does many people around like in the city or park, I do have a friend to accompany me as the spotter
overall I do not use drones for professional usage, which is why I'm not going to get a drone such as Air or Mavic series
Kikik Posted at 3-7 11:42

What country are you living in? In Norway, where I live, the riles are strick and we have hade quite a few tourists both being fined, getting equipment seized and being banned from the country for two years for not adhering to the rules.
I am also preferring places without people and mainly film and photo in the nature.
As you may have seen, I have an Air 3S as well, and I have not regretted it. To me the Mini 4 pro is an advanced toy with a great camera and advanced functions, while the Air 3S is a true drone with amazing cameras and functions. I have no aspirations whatsoever to become professional. To me, this is an extension of my happy as a photographer. Now I can reach the motivs that earlier were unavailable to me and still get an amazing quality out of the shots.
I have considered the Neo, but that both require more flying skills and not so much in line of what I want to achieve (even thought I think it is a lot of fun looking at the FPV videos). I will probably end up with a Mavic (or next lever Air) before I purchase an FPV drone (or if a FPV drone with better camera chip pops up, I might reconsider)

I live in Indonesia
I see, I think it's better to improve what you already have, the Air 3s is basically the ultimate drone currently anyway

Indonesia. That explains the exotic scenery
I do agree with you, the Air 3S is great. When hiking and bringing my EOS R and some foto lenses, the Mini 4 Pro is easier to bring with as the Air 3S needs more space, but the Air 3S is so nice to fly, so I do prefer that when I can. I also want to practice even more on different moves and get well comfortable with manual moves, and for that only one thing works; practice, practice and practice . I am improving, but there is always something to be learned and to improve.

Hi there. Sorry for the inconvienience. After powering on the remote controller, swipe down from the top of the screen to access the drop-down menu, and then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open System Settings. Enter the Compass Calibration screen. Tap the Start Calibration button on the screen and complete the calibration as prompted. After that, please try flying again to see if the issue persists. Additionally, kindly provide us with a video recording of the compass calibration process for the remote controller.
Note: The compass calibration settings are available in the system settings of the remote controller, but not in the DJI Fly app.

Am I talking to a bot, or is it simply that you simply do not rread what I ask? I am fully aware of where to find the Compass calibration. If I get no warning, I have to go to the pull-down menu and then setting and the compass calibration.
In my situation a warning for compass calibration appears imediately on the window of the pull-down menu, only there.

Admittedly, the following is a very remote possibility...
Is there anything nearby that is magnetic? Like a wrist watch with a magnetic band... Or a magnetic connector on a camera/camera strap.
This comes from the perspective of a recent experience with my watch...I complained to Apple that the compass app on my watch didn't work (always pointing East). "We" discovered that the Apple-supplied watch band had a magnetic clasp which interfered with the compass function.
Compass being a magnetic function, I now look for anything, everywhere when problems pop up that might be related.
Like I said... remote, but a possible hint. Good luck.

I have been extremely thorough in testing what might interfere with the compass. I have even put my phone directly to without any compass distortion. Close to iron or a heavy magnet, the compass do get messy (and even in some parts in a forest I do not venture so much, there might be magnetic interference due to high iron content and also magnetic properties in the rocks (identified on the orienteering maps I use when orienteering). I have had this problem at several occasions where any outside disturbance is definitely not in play.
You can check these videos and see if I left anything out to test.

We are truly sorry that our previous communication gave you the impression of an automated response. We understand your frustration regarding the compass notification not displaying on your main controller screen. To help us troubleshoot, could you please verify that notifications are enabled within your controller settings?
We would also like to clarify the type of compass calibration you are referencing, as there are separate calibrations for the drone and the controller. May I confirm if you were referring to the image below as the prompt/warning that you are referring to?

First of all, I am fully aware of the difference in compass calibration between the drone or the controller. If someone actually had read what I have written throughot this case, they should have understood that.
The picture you show is exactly what I would expect, but as written a few times already, the warning is only apparent in the pull-down menu as shown with the picture below several times. My point once more; When this message appear in the pull-down menu, I would also expect that a warning like the one you present also should show on the main screen, but is does not!

Hi Natalia,
Today, during a test of microphones, I once again got a message on the pulldown menu (but not on the main screen) that the controller compass required calibration. This is even after restoring to factory defaults and updating to the latest firmware (that became available at the same time). To me it does not seem like anything has changed (other than a lot of extra work for me having to set things up again (and I did not notice that the setting had reverted back to the internal disk, so all the recordings went there - now reverted back to the SD card).
All and all, a waste of time as it did not change anything.
I have also included something that I will add to another open case (regarding the controller icon pointing direction that still is incorrect).
