I made an amazing discovery over the weekend. We usually shoot most of our videos indoors and in poorly lit areas. However, we shot videos outside over the weekend in perfect weather. First of all, I have to say that we film in 4k / 60fps / DlogM with manual exposure. The exposure settings are as follows: Shutter 200 / EV -0.7 / ISO 800-12,800.
Now in poor light, this setting is the best we have found so far.
But yesterday it was bright sunshine. I specifically checked whether I could get EV-0.7 by going into the exposure menu. Yes, it said that the exposure reached a value of EV-0.7. However, this value is not correct. I could also set EV -2 and it would be displayed. The camera does not show any overexposure. Even if I set the shutter to 1/60, the value of EV-0.7 remains even though I only have a white image.
I thought I had made a mistake and that the value generally does not adjust. However, the camera does not make the mistake when it gets too dark. I could imagine that the partial overexposure and the burning out of the bright areas in the video are related to this. I was pretty surprised when I saw that.

I think I have just found the same thing where I’m blowing out the sky which makes it look less ‘hdr’ like. The meter might be wrong!

It looks as though HDR has been removed in Manual.

I suspect that having a lower ISO in manual makes contrast levels look different.

With your settings, the camera probably tries to expose with ISO (you have auto iso and fixed shutter and aperture). Since you limit lowest ISO to 800, you overexpose in bright light. Not sure what other cameras do in manual mode, but I don't find it that surprising that the exposure comp stays fixed in "manual" mode.

100-12800 is what I would prefer too (rather than 800 to 12800). But with the fixed shutter you can still run out of range outside (the sun is a very bright light).

I gave up using fixed shutter speed on the Action 2 because I couldn't get the same value to work in a bright day and underwater where you loose a lot of light. The sensor in the Action 5 seems to like higher sensitivity, so you might get good results with faster shutter speeds.

Maybe switching to a higher shutter speed outdoors can work for you? Depends what you can fit in your workflow: I can't change settings once I am in the water.

The EV meter on the Osmo Action 5 Pro only displays the current values in manual mode (Pro menu). When in auto mode (Pro menu), only the set values are displayed.

If you set the camera to manual in the Pro menu (ISO 100 - 12800) and adjust the exposure with EV Comp while holding your face to the camera, the image will become darker as soon as the face is no longer recognized.

If you adjust the settings without your face in the frame, the background will usually become brighter (overexposed up to one stop).

If all values are set to FIX (ISO, WB, Shutter), only the EV meter display changes, but the exposure remains the same (with and without a face in the frame).

I would like to be able to turn off this function because it is actually the main problem with the Osmo Action 5 Pro.
The effect is best seen when there is a bright light source in the picture.
