The Inspire1 uses built-in GPS (to the QuadCopter, not the remote) to set it's initial home point. If you want dynamic home point, see page 23 of the draft manual that clearly states:

2.7 Dynamic Home Point
Dynamic home point is useful in situations when you are in motion and require a Home point that is different from the
takeoff point. Dynamic home point is only available to the GPS-enabled mobile device. Turn on GPS and data service
to obtain higher accuracy of the mobile device position. The Home point will be reset to position of the mobile device at specific time intervals. Select Dynamic Home Point from the “Camera” page in DJI Pilot App.


So you only need GPS in you iPad if you want dynamic home point.  I'm not sure how it shows your spot on the map while flying though (does it used cached maps and the Inspire1 sending back its GPS position?)

You're wrong. Tahoe Ed has answered this on another forum (RCGroups), stating that there is GPS capability in the controller, meaning that a WiFi iPad is all that is necessary. If there is GPS in the Tx, then dynamic home point is available, as well. Lots of errors in that draft manual.

I hope so... that would be neat, but I just can't believe they would have GPS in the remote. It just seems unnecessarily redundant and more expensive, but we'll see.

This is extra cool and should really be touted more as a feature of the system, having GPS built into the controller is a pretty big deal!

How about for the Slave unit... Will the original iPad Mini work? That what I'm currently using with my Lightbridge and no problems at all.

Would be looking at running an iPad Mini 3 with the Master and iPad Mini as the Slave unit.

I dont think the ipad mini will work, I believe that there is a minimum requirement for an A7 processor to run the app, the mini has an A5 processor so it will not run the app.

The iPad mini with Retina display works and has the A7 processor.  That is why you don't believe everything that is in a draft manual, that is why they call them "draft".  This error has been corrected in the newest draft manual.  The Tx has a GPS module that allows for Dynamic Home Point.

I tend to do all outside work on my 6 plus despite of my iPad mini.
So using the 6 plus would simplifiy even more the charging management by removing an external (and costative for some) élément.

the specs page lists the ipad 4 as compatible which runs on a a6x. Has that changed?

Thank you for the response. I am aware of the iPad mini and Air specs needed for the Inspire 1 App, but seeking your advice on what Android tablets you have seen or know that will work with the Inspire 1 app as well.
Example: Samsung - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 or Samsung - Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

It will probably work but my experience is that you need the most processing power that you can get.

The Lightening cable has a USB end as well as the lightening end.  It works.  I just purchased a 3 pack of 8" cables for less than $9.  They seem to be the perfect length.

Thats what I was hoping for. If that was the case, I would only have to purchase 1 additional mini. But by the sounds of it, my current iPad Mini that I use with Lightbridge will not work with the Inspire 1 App.

The holder for your tablet will fit anything from an iPhone to an iPad. It is adjustable. I received this info from DJI.

That's exactly my thought... Not worried about the bracket. I want to make sure that it can run the app.

Wish someone from dji could advise.  I have until Monday to return this tablet then i'm stuck with it...
Thankfully I got to test it yesterday on a live Inspire and it works great!

I've installed pilot on my Samsung tab 3 android 4.4.2 and so far so good (even though it is no in the compatible devices list in the play store...i.e. downloaded and installed directly from DJI).  Dont have my copter yet but will find out if fully functional next week hopefully.

Guys -

Think of it as base to recommended requirements. Yes it will run on a iPad4 but to get decent latency and performance you will need a higher end device.

iOS app seems to be more CPU dependent(A7 or higher), where the android is more RAM dependent(2gig)

Nvidia Shield (Android 4.4.2) Quad core is another option for powerful graphics and  memory.(gaming tablet)
