Glen, there are a few other threads in this forum with the same information. But just briefly:
Study up on: Vortex Ring State or Prop Wash, Hand Catch Landings (as opposed to landing on concrete and watching it tip over upon the CSC Stick Coomand and chipping a prop, and Waiting for 8+ satellites before take off. Also look in to NAZA-M Mode, especially Home Lock and Failsafe modes for your S1 and S2 switches. Be careful if you use prop guards, they contribute to VRS, in my opinion. And watch EVERY VIDEO you can regarding the Phantom and learn from other's mistakes.
Start in a large field away from everything (houses, structures, trees, etc.). And learn the Advanced Flight Techniques forward and backward, especially flying nose in.
