I need to shoot 4k video and extract photos along 9 miles of highway.
I have never updated the firmware and app to the newest, I'm still on the version just before the new app with follow me etc. The reason for not updating is because the old app and firmware are working perfectly for me.
Having said that, now I need to use something like the follow me feature and I really don't want to update the app and firmware.  Any other way to do 9 miles of highway from a moving car or truck?

You can just fly from the car and update the home point as you go.

If he's not willing to update his firmware (his current version apparently doesn't support POI or the follow mode) he won't have the dynamic home point either, will he?

He does not have to update the firmware to use the home point feature, it's on the main screen of the app. It's not part of the F-Mode features.You can either chose to update the home point to the aircraft's current location, or to the R/C's current location if the phone/tablet had GPS.
You tap the 3rd icon on the laft side, and that opens up the choice of aircraft or R/C home point.
