I want to be able to smoothly pan from head-height to foot-height and have the camera maintain the same orientation, but the gimbal snaps into Portrait (descending left or right) or Torch (descending to the front), even while recording. Could these modes be made optional in a future update?

You can lock the tilt in the app ->setting->gimbal->smoothTrack settings->tilt, then the camera will transit smoothly from upright to torch mode. Also, the new firmware had changed the roll angle limit from 30 to 40 degrees and made a smooth transiton to portrait mode. Thanks for you suggestion, we will consider it seriously.

By "new firmware", do you mean the next one, or the one released on the 27th?

Transitioning into portrait mode would be fine, as long as it is SMOOTH, at the same rate/speed as the current movement that triggers portrait in the first place. Do that and I'll be very happy.
