I've been carrying my RC units in my carry on bags.  Several people recently have said they can be cheecked.  Do you check them or carry them on the plane with you?

As far as I know, they can be checked (thought I don't have any personal experience with it).

From everything I have read it seems like the smart thing to do is to continue to carry the rc unit(s) in carry on luggage since the rc unit has a lipo battery.

The lipo battery must go in carry on. Everything else gets checked
