I agree with what he is saying,  however being an engineer I am surprised that he does not know that 2 1/2 tons is not 3000 pounds.  It is 5000 pounds.  And he said it 2 or 3 times,  so it was not a slip.  He clearly thinks a ton is 1000 pounds.

Hey,  I know the feeling.  When I meet new people I usually issue a disclaimer that I do not know and have no control over whatever comes out of my mouth at any given moment.  Sometimes it gets me in a lot of trouble.  Other times it horrifies  even me.

If he thought a ton was 1000lbs, wouldn't 2 1/2 tons be 2500?

Maybe he is talking about tonnes ie metric ton.  1 metric tonne = 1000 kg which = 2200 lbs.
