Switching GoPro on

Hello all,

I have a phantom 2, Zenmuse hd 3d gimbal and GoPro Hero 3+.  I was wondering if there is a way to have the gopro switch on when powered up by the Quad and go into default recording mode ready to be switched on just before flight.

At the moment I have to fight with the gimbal while I try to switch on the GoPro, then set it recording when ready (unless I forget.....again....grrr).

Wondered if anyone has found a way to do this (wifi would be great but I understand there are "issues" from the research I have done).

Many thanks for reading, Peter.

I don't think it can be easily done - it's well known that the GP solution has it's shortcomings - mostly that it takes so long to get going and you have no control after takeoff.

If we look at the DJI timeline...remember that they introduced this stuff way before integrated solutions were available. I think going forward (they are announcing something at CES), we will see more OEM cameras for this reason.

I wouldn't be surprised (speculation, of course) if DJI and GP had talks and DJI asked them long ago to build in some remote shutters, etc...and they refused...maybe looking at the market as being too small to mod their cams. Now GP is coming out with their own drones!

Short and sweet I think going forward you won't see as many GoPro models out of DJI. It says a lot that they didn't even upgrade to take the GP4 series.

Have you considered the GoPro remote?

Try turning on the GoPro before you turn on the Phantom, that way you don't fight the gimbal. @momochi you would need wifi on the GoPro turned on to use the remote which could cause problems with the gps.

Thanks everyone, good tip to turn it on before Phantom, I do have it in one touch mode at the moment.

I tried the video and photo option, but felt the loss of Protune wasn't worth it for me.

@droneflyers.com I think you are right, provided DJI can get a good camera, their all in one solutions may be best in future, especially as these solutions have the options of using autonomous flying etc which as far as I can see non vision owners are not likely to be able to do.

Cheers, Peter.

I'd give it a ago, I think it allows greater fiddling with colours contrast white balance etc.

Also in video and photo mode, I note that unless you shoot in 1440 video (I think) which is 4:3 ratio, the max "still frame" is 8Mb not 12mb.

All in all I resolved to shoot one or the other.

Peter.

Just a point of non sense, i have turned my Gopro 3+ on and to record with the phantom a calm hover. You will have to fight the phantom and the gimbal a bit but it isn't that hard.

I have Phantom 2 with H3-3D and Gopro 4 Black with 5.7GHz transmitter.

My regular procedure:
- power on Phantom 2
- wait for initialization of Gimbal
- power on Gopro 4 (setup 4K video 30fps)
- Tests video connection with my FPV
- Calibrate Compass of Phantom 2
- press shutter button of Gopro 4 for record video
-  flight start
