I have seen lots of threads and chatter regarding FAA Section 333 exemption in our forum and elsewhere.

I found this video that really sums up most of the questions you might have and the untruth rumors that are spread by folks that just do not know the answers. Some of us are full scale pilots that have been flying RC as a hobby that would qualify for flying a UAV using the commercial 333 exemption. Others think it is overkill or unnecessary.....  In about two years the FAA will have a certified UAV training course for most everyone else that is not willing to go and spend large amount of money to get there pilot's license... So I think a happy medium is coming very soon that everyone can live with. Of course I am only speaking for the USA as other countries have their own governing bodes to set the rules.

Yah, we wait for the movie to be released and then it becomes reality..  

remember it is the home of the free ...  I think     so things take longer
So, at least they have a long term plan and maybe the AMA will get some input on this final ruling. I really like the idea of training and everyone can learn about safety and the rules that need to be followed.

Maybe then we can see more areas (like the national parks) open for UAV with  licensed operation only

Saw this video last year and it helped guide me thru the 333 process. Took about 4 months. I do have a pilot license. Based on what a FAA UAS Integration Office rep told a group at a workshop I was at recently It may be a lot less than 2 years. They hope to have the process done by this summer.

I've had my exemption for close to a year and my petition was 20 something pages along with PDF of safety guidelines, manuals, emergency procedures, logbooks, and other stuff. and been a private pilot for over 20yrs.
I've seen granted exemptions lately and some of the petition only a few pages.
It couldn't be any simpler now to get an exemption now.

If you go to the FAA website, they actually tell you they would prefer if you looked up an exemption and just copy it, chasing the names of course to yours.  It is very easy, took me about 20 min to do it.  On the FAA 333 Exemption website, they have step by step instructions on how to look up granted exemptions.  It seems strange, but they want you to copy and paste for the most part.

This is awesome news... I intend to Pursue my private pilots regardless.
But this would make this years work much easier, not having my co-workers or buddies tag along every time I want to map a quarry.

I know what you mean. I've seen some guys only use one page to file for the exemption. Mine was 37 pages long. Crazy.

nice, orange county lot of great weather to fly there !!
We certainly have a lot of aviation experience in our forum group..... Even Dave... wow that's cool. I sold my Pitts Special S1D to someone in Fresno CA and really miss flying my Ferrari of the skies.

Nice, never flew a Pitts, closest I got was spin training in a Decathlon. I've had several aircraft over the years. 77&78 Arrow, V-tail Bonanza, Grumman AA1B, and a few 150's.

I don't know about Dave but I only applied for my P3, what a dumb move. I've since submitted an amendment with about 10 aircraft SEVERAL MONTHS AGO and haven't heard a peep.

I've had my own aerial photography business since 2007. I started with an RC airplane and a canyon point and shoot camera attached to the side of the airplane.
I'm currently working for a different company and I am flying under their 333 exemption.
My personal 333 exemption is in the mail.
I'm only getting that in case I want to do some work of my own like I used to. But to be honest lately the company I work for is keeping me busy enough to where I don't need to do that.

Nice, way back then there was Sunrise and OC Flight Center were the two big ones.
Mine was from Sunrise. Michael Church used to do my check rides, really intimidating instructor but really great and smart guy.

Spin training in a Decathlon. Same here, have a feeling you might've gone to the same school I did.
I got to do loops and rolls too. I took a extra course to do some of that stuff.

My flight instructor was Eric Kiight.

Remember the black dog that used to walk around the ground school and offices that was blind?
Very old dog it might've passed on before you were there.

I have a lot of hours with stick and rudder, but there is not much that can prepare you for the S1D single seater. It is like strapping the motor right on your nose and going for it. Love flying and at 155 VNE I could cover the ground.
sounds like you have good experience ... Other than my Pitts... my favorite is helicopters Hughes 500D... but I wont bore you anymore with that stuff.

I don't remember him, mine was Chris Baker. I remember that dog, It was Michael's I think. Lynn Carlson was the ground school instructor, she was awesome too.

That's where I used to take my dates, used to rent a 150 and fly around the perimeter of Disneyland at 9pm and be right next to the fireworks. Can't do that anymore.

I knew it as the Doctor killer for another reason. Excessive speed when descending and the tail would rip off and the aircraft became a human lawn dart. (Must have been scary to see yourself plummeting to the ground knowing what the outcome will be.)
And the V-tail was the choice of aircraft for Doctors, like a status symbol.

At least your getting paid for flying. I'm sure it's a great career.
I just met a pilot for Discount Tire and I'm so jealous of the things he gets to do, and I'm sure he's paid incredibly well. They have a massive hanger at Scottsdale.

Yup this is very true and my hanger partner had the Beechcraft Bonanza debonair with the conventional tail.  Never like the "V" tail you always had to hold rudder to keep the tail from wagging at cruise.

So, did the make the Disneyland area a no fly zone? I see helicopters flying at night all the time. Matter of fact I will post someone flying a aerobatic plane over the park making a heart!
