Aloha Dave,
Your first part of your first point is probably right. Anything closer than ten feet tends to give you false or no signal. Also, make sure you either are or are not in "Beginner's Mode". You will need to know that in order to evaluate your P3's performance. Please be aware that on this forum, the P3 Standard and P3 4K are WiFi and the P3 Advanced and P3 Professional are USB cabled. There are advantages and disadvantages to both forms. If you note the type of P3 being commented upon, it may save you a lot of confusion and probably make your flying easier.
Without props on the P3, it changes RPM with almost no resistance. This may be the cause of your concern. But still, as you are already doing, approach the first flight with an abundance of caution. Because your P3 uses WiFi, interference can be more of a problem, so keep away from reinforced concrete structures, electric lines and large pieces of metal like cars and metal structures. I had serious problems with 10 meter excavators and Caterpillars when I came 10 or 15 meters from them for close-ups of the operators using my P3 Pro.
Reading the manual a few times can "mean" some of the best time you spend flying.
