I live in the rocky mountians and most of the open space parks up here are a no fly zone.

Anyone live around the denver area and have great places to fly? I drive down for work 5 times a week so I
wouldnt mind an after work drone session.

Thanks for the help!

I would say City Park downtown Denver but I've never seen so many squadrons of geese defend on one place at the same time in my life lol I'm drawing a blank, most of the area is outdoors parks. We have a place that butts up against the rmnp but I it's all foothills and trees. I would be afraid I would loose signal or hit a hit.

It's illegal to fly quadcopters at City Park. Here are the park and rec rules for Denver. https://www.denvergov.org/content/dam/denvergov/Portals/747/documents/rules/DPR_RulesAndRegulations.pdf

I've been trying to find legal areas to fly in the Denver area but I've had no luck.  Does anyone have a place they recommend?  I would mind driving an hour or so to get this thing airborne.

Rules or no rules it wouldn't work....you couldn't get airborne at City Park.

Anyhow, maybe lookout mountain west of Denver? If they can launch motorized parachutes, then maybe it's okay for model aircraft? How about hiking areas? There is a lot of open hiking areas around Boulder. Flatiron trail head off highway 93 for one. There is another on Lee Hill road just east of Broadway? There is another one north of Boulder on 36 just outside of town. I can't recall the name but it's a small county road like Longhorn? It's most a dirt road, ok if the wealth has been fine but would avoid it if it's rains or snowed a lot. Thats all I've got for now. We have a place there but I spend most of my time with a trip pod and DSLR instead of my drones.

Here is a a don't fly map. https://www.mapbox.com/drone/no-fly/

I found a legal place to fly. Cherry Creek State park! You have to be a member of the Denver RC Eagles or an AMA member.

Nice find!

I'm sure the Denver RC Club can point you in the direction of other places. Here is a link with a list of places as well.http://www.rcgroups.com/places/1 ... fields-in-colorado.

I wonder how the RC groups respond to drone pilots?

Thanks for the link!  I might go and scope out the field sometime soon.  I've heard that many RC groups don't necessarily like quads but I'm guessing they'll appreciate me asking beforehand.

Ya, quads or at least irresponsible quad owners has really changed the RC world almost over night. What was supposed to be legislation for commercial drones, turned into a broad sweeping registration for all model aircraft...well, most of it anyhow. Thats why I wonder how those RC aircraft clubs are going to respond to us using their fields.

Most important thing is to have your AMA membership and follow all the rules of the field.

Rotary wing aircraft typically (and they do at Suhaka field) have a separate area for flying.  Model clubs have a hard time getting along when fixed wing and rotary wings mix on the same runway.
