I am a 56 yr old who accidently told my family before Christmas that I would like to have A Phantom2.  I have been sitting on the fence for several months but could not pull the trigger. My problem was, I keep reading all the negative reports about fly aways.  Well Santa was very good to me and now I have a Phantom2.  My problem now is I'm afraid to fly it.  How can I make sure its software is up to date? What is the newest software Version for the Phantom 2 and is there a video available with instructions how to download?

Welcome.  You really need to get the latest manual for your Phantom from the DJI website.  It will tell you what you need to know, and you really need to read it and study it.

Get familiar with the DJI website, and how to find the documentation and software for your product.  I will be glad to help with any questions, as will others.  But you do need to do your due diligence in preparing yourself for flight by studying your aircraft's documentation and learning it's functions and capabilities.

The Phantom series is a wonderful product and a blast to fly.  But also remember the 5 P's.   Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance.

What model of Phantom do you have exactly?  Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision, Phantom 2 with a gimbal, Phantom 2 Vision +?

I recently purchased a Phantom 2 Vision + v3 and I appear to be having difficulty installing Assistant Software v3.6 on my macbook pro (Mid 2010) running OS x 10.9.5.  When I attempt to run the installer, I get a DJI assistant screen labeled Phantom 2.  There appears to be a red staus bar running left to right about a third of the way down the screen but it stops about 2/3 of the way to the right.  There is also a "SKIP" label with an right pointing arrow.  Nothing happens until I click on the skip label and the next screen is labeled DJI Phantom 2. ( with menus that are similar to the Assistant for menu, basic, advances, tools, upgrade and info as shown in the manual). However, vewing screen shots on the web of the DJI Assistant for MAC, the label on the top reads DJI Phantom 2 Vision +.  The instructions I downloaded from the DJI site also list the DJI Assistant as DJI Phantom 2 Vision +.  I am wondering if the installation on my Mac is correct.  I'm concerned that the Assiatant software running on my Mac may not be appropriate for the lastest version of the Phantom 2 Vision+.  As a result, I have not attempted to connect my Phantom to the Assistant software.  Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Assistant will open and say Phantom 2 as default if no bird is connected.  Hook up your aircraft, once it recognizes your model, it will identify it.

When I look at the software upgrade tab in the Assistant Software there is a Firmware column and a Upgrade column.  In the firmware  column it says "3.08" in the upgrade column it says "Latest Version" 3.08 with a check mark in a green circle. What exactly are each of those 2 columns telling me?

It is telling you the latest version, and the one you have installed.  You are good to go.

I down loadedPhantom2 Assistant Software v.36 what I hope to be the correct Version.  My desk top icon shows: Phantom2 Vision Assistant 3.6..

I also downloaded DJI Win Driver Installer. I ran it and I guess its working correctly. Fingers definitely crossed!! I spoke with a rep. at a dealer who sells Phantom1 and asked him about flyaways and I was told about aprox, 1 out of 200 have flyaways. He told me they didn't sell Phantom2's.  

Yes 3.6 is the latest, and you'll use the Assistant software to update your Phantom, and to perform other functions as well.

Read up on your manuals, learn what the LED status lights mean, and do some motor startups and shut downs with the props off.

Download and install "DJI RC System Assistant_1.2 to use to calibrate your flight control sticks.

Well, there are a lot of theories and a lot of talk about flyaways.  You can glean some good information from this forum, other forums, youtube, etc...  Though take some of it with a grain of salt.

Just take your time, learn your aircraft and follow the instructions in the manuals.  It really is very easy to fly in GPS mode, and once you understand the controls and indicator lights, just put it up.  Just not too high or too far to begin with.
