I painted my P2 recently and wanted to show it off. It didn't come out perfect, but I think it came out ok. It added about 10 grams.

Because I bought a new shell and figured why not.

That's fair enough, I've often wondered why folks spend time and money making them even harder to keep visual track of.

White seems to vanish quickly in the sky. How is yours with the new paint job?

I painted mine black for the same reason. It is so much easier to see it during the day, especially if it is cloudy.

Does anyone have thoughts about darker colors and heat during the summer?  With the ESC issues, I'm wondering if the color could matter.

Well, the paint is new... so I don't know how it will affect battery life, yet. I'm hoping I'll have time to make and eat a ham sammich while flying it.

Black is much more visible of course! Nice job.  Another reason to paint is to make it personalized.  Very nice.

You bring up a point I had not actually considered when I painted it. The Phantoms operating temp is from 32 to 104 degrees. But after thinking about this I'm not so worried about external temps as much as the ambient internal temps generated by components. Specifically I'm not worried about solar heating as the bird will be moving and the air flow over shell should negate most the solar heating effects due to the black paint. I hope I am right, guess I will find out this summer. Maybe that is why DJI only makes the Phantom in white.

Also, like drone pointed out on a previous post, make sure that the paint is non-metallic. It might not make a difference, but I wouln't take the risk.

Yeah, I was wondering how that paint might disrupt GPS signals.  Looks cool though.  A little sinister.

Nice look!! are those usb flashlights on landing gear?

No, they where made for the Phantom 1.  I had to cut the connectors off to make them work on the Phantom 2 Vision+ They are really bright.

They're gone. I replaced them with these.


The old ones weighed 32g each the new ones weigh 20g total. The new ones are held on with velco so they are easy on/off. They already saved my butt when I was flying in the fog. I  know not real smart, and I won't do that again.

I'll try to get one in flight:

I would not fly in this config as it weighs about 1460g. If the camera was off maybe. There are extra power connectors in the lets so I put both sets of lights on just for fun. When my Quickrelease shows up and is installed I'll have to see what it really weighs without the camera.

Those lights look Good. Black paint job...stealth!!!

Surely you can't think a color other than white would make it harder to see against a background of clouds that are white?

ah yes, how silly of me, I forgot that the sky and clouds are always white
