It does not matter which one you do first.

I got this information off of the DJI.com site. The manual posted there on pg 56 shows this:

56
©
2015 DJI. All Rights Reserved.
Appendix
Phantom 3 Professional
User Manual
Firmwares Update
Use Micro SD card to update the aircraft and Intelligent Flight Battery. Connect to the Internet,
launch the DJI GO app. The DJI GO app will start checking for available firmware updates
automatically. Follow the on-screen instruction to update the latest firmware for the aircraft, remote
controller and intelligent flight battery

I was a weapons specialist of conventional and non-conventional weapons of mass destruction. In our technical orders and manual you followed the instructions word for word, step by step, line by line. So are you saying with the DJI manual where is no specific order on how to do specific tasks?

DJI - Phantom 3 Tutorial - Updating The Firmware
2015-05-21

I also got this from the DJI.com site. It also shows the aircraft is updated first, then the RC next. It also shows that the RC update is accomplished via the micro sd card used to update the aircraft? Is this true or is the RC update accomplished through the DJI go app?

So is this information obtained through DJI.com site, the DJI manual and the DJI tutorials  up to date and accurate, or does DJI need to update their "stuff" so we can get the most accurate "stuff" from DJI. There seems to be a lot of confusion all over this forum and I wonder where its coming from?!

You are correct with 2.
I set the aspect ratio to 16:9 in the DJI Go app settings, but it still appears to be at 4:3 in the live stream.

Then follow the manual, but I can tell you it doesn't matter which one you update first.
When the app tells you the RC needs update and also the aircraft needs update. You can choose the RC update right then and it will download the update 9if your on WiFi)  and upload to the RC. Or you can download the ZIP file from the website, then put the extracted BIN file onto your formatted SD card and put it in the aircraft (RC powered off) and power up the aircraft.
Again, it really doesn't which one you do first.

And yes, if your firmware is below 1.3, then you need to download and put the BIN file onto a USB stick and plug it into the back of the RC to update the RC to 1.3.
After that, all RC updates are done through the app.
But 1.3 came out last August, so most everything being sold now should be above 1.3

Hi! I don't understand what you did. Could you explain again?
I tried to force update the rc agai ...

ok ok so here it is: the update from 1.5.70 to 1.5.80 for the RC crashed via the Galaxy 5 note  from the updated go app .. the go app said the RC needed to be updated .. it forced the RC upgrade from the go app on the Galaxy Note 5 .. I had always updated my RC type B in the past via the USB port on the RC .. this was my first time doing it from within the go app .. so I downloaded the update to the Galaxy Note 5 via the go app .. it downloaded with no errors .. but when I clicked the install it failed .. I tried to update two more times via the Galaxy Note 5 but it would not and said failed each time .. I was able to get the update to install via the go app on the iPad air 2 .. I use both iOS and android devices so that is why the mention of two different devices .. now the reason that I believe that I had problems is because I live in the deep woods and my internet is supplied by Verizon via the Galaxy Note 5 and the hotspot on my Galaxy Note 5 .. the auto update via the go app was not the fault my lack of experience was .. I am thinking now that the reason I was able to get the update to go on to the RC was there was no switching back and forth on the iPad air 2 .. it gets it`s internet from the hotspot on the Galaxy Note 5 only .. the Galaxy Note 5 was no doubt switching back and forth from data to hotspot or Wi-Fi  .. I must tell you that yes I did get it to update .. but it hung or if you don`t no what I mean by that the update never ended its self .. the blue light never changed to green and the 4ds never changed to the 1long 2 short ds of success .. I let it run beeping the 4ds for 1.25 hours blue light on steady .. then I closed the go app on the iPad air 2 and turned off the RC .. rebooted the RC reloaded the go app on the iPad air 2 and it was or showed success PLEASE let me know if this helped you...!!! ;-)

My P3S is also having control signal problems after updating the firmware. During this flight: http://healthydrones.com/main?share=MjkyOA , the control signal strength was very unreliable, with many loss-of-signal events at ranges shorter than what I had previously managed without any loss of signal at the very same location: http://healthydrones.com/main?share=MjQxOQ

The gimbal was replaced by DJI between these flights as well, but I believe that's a separate system that only handles the Wifi downlink, which was rock solid the entire flight.

I'm guessing that since you are in the woods and may not have the best internet, it's possible one of the firmware packets was corrupted and that's why the update was hanging up.
If this happens to other users, they can delete the app and reinstall then the app will again say there's a update required, and start the process over again.

And August last year the update was 1.3 and that's when the app started being able to update through the device and not a USB stick plugged into the TX.

Now the P4 has it even better, no more BIN files. Update is done through your device hardwired to the P4 OR there's also an Assistant2 software that will do the upgrade.

Thank you very much for your help! Now I understand what were you saying.. my problem is that my rc never boots up. It status led blinks solid cyan and the dji go app doesn't recognise it. The app only detects that the is a rc connected and nothing more.. when I tried to force the update with my galaxy s6, the upgrade never starts and on my dji go app folder is generated a log with this info:

upgrade failed 2016-03-16 08:33:31reason device[OSD]err[TIMEOUT]reason[Enter Loader Mode failed]

I have tried a lot of button combination but nothing happens..
I would appreciate if anybody could tell me what about warranty. DJI have to give me a new rc. Don't they?

Select your craft and download app for phone/tablet and RC and firmware for aircraft/battery.
Not hard at all.

What I want to know is how do I revert back to previous Apk and firmware?
I did the latest update and now my camera starts up pointing up at an odd angle with "gimbal motor overheating".
No amount of cold IMU, no-interference Compass, and level Gimbal calibration could fix it.
I have done updates many times, this one was the worst.
My perfect P3A is crippled.
DJI really screw the pooch this time...

How do I revert back to previous 1.6+
Where can I can download previous Apk?
Can anyone help?
Much appreciated!

Nevermind... I figured it out.
The update somehow screwed up the yaw arm motor shaft alignment.
I opened up the yaw arm and leveled the motor shaft.
Now, everything works perfect. Test flight went as smooth as before.

Why doesn't the manual or the DJI  tutorial mention anything about versions installed in the RC and, if your RC is v1.3 or higher you must upgrade through the DJI go app? It would have saved me and Best Buy a bunch of headaches! The Geek Squad and I went through all of their P3P's in store trying to upgrade a RC according to the DJI manual. All failed because we performed the upgrade to the letter in the manual and tried to upgrade via the sd card. Best Buy ordered another P3P through their web site and as I waited  a week for that one to be delivered I searched YouTube and found the correct way to upgrade the RC using the DJI Go app. I love my P3P and enjoy flying it most days, but my initial experience with DJI was a major headache and almost moved to Yuneec drones because of it. Is it too difficult to redo the tutorial and rewrite that portion of the DJI manual to reflect  difference in RC versions?

Unfortunately after the android app update, 16:9 video displays in a 4:3 frame!

Mine is not only 4:3, the aspect is squished and looks distorted.

I also notice if I go to video mode, 16:9 comes back. Going into pic mode forces 4:3 back. Despite pic settings being 16:9. Try taking a short vid and see if it changes back to 16:9

After the upgrade (V01.07.0060) my P3P flies very well and this morning I flew out to 1.4 miles without any signal loss. My complaints are that many settings changed to default, AWB, histogram was gone.  Auto exposure, really messed with me, couldn't find the manual exposure mode (probably because I never change it). I do not want my settings changing without my approval, ever!  The exposure system seems to have changed too, I still need to explore it more to understand the changes. But over all the upgrade was smooth. I did update all my batteries as well, each seemed to take very fast.  BTW, I do not believe that vibration problems come from software, I solved mine by properly balancing the props, very smooth ever since. Also, if you get excessive "jello" in your videos, remove all the dumb ND filters and your shutter speeds will be fast again, which cuts way down on jello effect.

P3A RC without function after update today!
After I was told by the DJI GO App to update everything seemed to be ok, but then I was told that the process was not successfull and to retry. Everytime I hit the buttom I was told "diconnected". The connection was all the time ok, but I always got the same message. After about 30 minutes I had to power down the RC because nothing happend, always the same reaction "disconnected". Now after powering on the RC obviously is connected to the GO App (written on the display) but doesn´t react. The LINK LED in the P3 stays red. No manually linking possible. Solution? Thanks for any help!

Hello!

I went to update my P3S today and everything was going super smooth until.. get this... 99%. The update stayed on 99% for 8 mins or so until a prompt came up on my DJI go app screen and said the update had failed and to shut off all equipment and try again; with a button that said 'Complete.' <--- Which I thought was a bit strange. I pressed complete, turned off and all equipment, fired it all back up and now I can't even get the upgrade firmware prompt to show up.... It's just running like everything worked fine and the upgrade went through. Is there anyway to tell what version your Standard is running on??

This is the only txt. file I could find from the SD card. I even went to properties and turned on hidden files.

Also, the gimbal pitch smoothing doesn't work for me anymore! Does it work for you?

I just upgraded to a P3 Advance from a Standard.  Out of the box I had to do a firmware update that failed. Called into customer service and they informed me to update to an older version before fully updating to the most recent. The APP says controller and firmware require update. I wiped a card, put the bin file in the P3 powered up and I am staring at two blinking yellow lights and two solid red. The light on the gimbal was solid green the entire time and not displaying firmware update behavior as indicated on the site. No chirps or chimes other than the start up.  Its been over 30 minutes and I'm tempted to shut it off. Any thoughts? No whats the deal with the remote? Can I plug the remote into the P3 gimbal? Does that do anything?

Hey Tim;  I"ve never had to update my firmware since I just got my P3 Advanced...  since I am about to do it for the first time, do I just update both the aircraft and the controller with the latest firmware on the website?  And does the battery update also with the same firmware?  thanks!

DJI has the opportunity to get it right "EVERY TIME" not sometimes... Was it that I heard they have a 1500 man crew dedicated to R&D but release hurried firmware every other week attempting to address the previous firmware "Poor Coding Attempts".... It would make more sense and be better for the customer base if they didn't feel like they have to rush into place updates as to appear always on the move.  They need to slow down, test the firmware, revise it, test again and again before releasing to the public. It is possible to write firmware that is a one operation installer rather than a hodge podge multipart gamble.

Test, test, test and then test... once it passes all the tests... release it to the public. Lots of people save for a long time to buy one of their products and shouldn't have to worry if the firmware update "took or not"

Just talked to Jackson from dji. He advised me our video problems have nothing to do with the firmware update and dji have no knwledge of any problems with the firmware update.  I told him the complaints were on their forum so assume these forums are not looked at. He says everyone with the video problem will have to send their phantom in for repair.

Why doesn't the manual or the DJI  tutorial mention anything about versions installed in the RC an ...

I am new to DJI and drones in general so its a learning curve for me.

I did exactly the same.....wouldn't update from the sd card in the back of the RC......website/tutorial video states to do it that way......they really need to keep their tutorials up to date....i can see why lots of ppl stuff up the updates if the DJI tutorials are saying one thing but changed months ago to something different.
I am in I.T and managed to work it out myself...some others may not have the same level of troubleshooting knowledge to do that.

Come on DJI your products are awesome but sadly let down by the lack of updates to tutorials. The first place anyone would look for help..........

I totally agree with you...but DJI also need to have someone dedicated to updating tutorials. There are new processes for firmware updates that are not mentioned.
Causes confusion and frustration for newbies.

Good morning. Unfortunately, I also have the same problem. I performed the steps, 6 times. Without success. For remote controll the update was immediate, Made direct from the tablet, connected to remote.

Upgraded my P3S today. I have the DJI GO 2.7.1 App on a IPAD Air. I closed all apps, rebooted the iPad. Put it in flight mode. I then started the DJI GO app. Connected the controller and then the aircraft. After that I switched to my wifi. The app then told me that there was a new firmware. I downloaded that and switched back to the Phantom wifi. The DJI GO app told me I now could deploy the update which I did. The aircraft started to beep like it did last time I upgrade. The upgrade took about 10 min. After it had finished I rebooted aircraft and controller. I did a fast boot and checked the menus, changed the RTH height to 50 meters. After that I shut down everything for 5min. I then started up again and calibrated the IMU. Shut down again. Charged the battery again for a bit. Then I took it out for a test drive.

My thoughts on the test it that it went as smooth as before. Even a little better I think. I reached further this time before I got any lost signal which only happened twice for a fraction of a second.
It was very stable and I managed to get 750 meters and that's where I ran out of land and didn't dare to go over water so I turned back.

I am really interested I some sort of extender or windsurfer antenna. I think I would get pretty far if I wanted with my aircraft. But for now I will settle for 500 which is really all I need.

Tonight I will verify my versions within the app. I forgot to do that.

Cheers, over and out.

My DJI Go App recognises my P3P as a Phantom 4, so I can't use it.

I'm on the latest version 1.7.0060, and RC is also up to date. I switched it on for a flight as I always do, and even when I selected Phantom 3 Professional, it became Phantom 4 automatically upon turning the aircraft ON. Camera mode shows Aircraft Disconnected in red.

I downgraded to 1.6 on the aircraft but problem is still there.

Uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my iPad mini, and still not working.

Any other users with this same issue, please let me know what you did to troubleshoot this. Thank you very much,

Andro.
