Located in the Gordon river valley on Vancouver Islands west coast stands Big Lonely Doug. At 66 metres tall and estimated to be 1000 years old Lonely Doug is Canada's second tallest known Douglas Fir. The tallest tree which is also a Douglas Fir stands only a few kilometres from this one in the Red Creek area. The big difference being that the Red Creek Fir still stands amongst other giants in the area. Big Lonely Doug is all alone amidst the harsh reality of clear-cut logging. Dotted around the area where this giant grows lies the remnants of many other old large trees.
