I wanted to know if there is a way ti shut off sonar i fly over water often .

I have flown my P3A over water during the past year.  I never disable the VPS, ever.

I fly over Lake Hodges (what's left of it) and the Pacific Ocean (Del Mar area mostly) regularly without ever turning it off.

I have also flown numerous times when the kp index was over 6 with no problems.

I am an anecdote.
