Hello all-

I have a Core i5 Macbook pro...2-3 years old. When i loaded up the 4k footage from my flights this past weekend, the video is VERY choppy..almost unwatchable. Can someone give me a straight answer as far as the playback of these vidoes? i saved them to the hard drive fyi. Also my laptop is not a 4K screen or anything, but should I be able to watch it?

I flew my P4 this weekend (awesome by the way) - one thing i noticed is on full descent, it can become a little wobbly.

Either get a new 4k computer or record in 1080.

Need new computer and graphics card. I just built a new computer so that I would be able to play or edit 4k. Intel i7 6700k 4GHz with EVGA geforce GTX 970 FTW.

Is your screen able to handle the 4k size? I think yours handle up to 2560 x 1600. Minimum 4k size is 3840 x 2160. You need to have a screen that can handle 4k like the newer macs. I had a late 2009 I7 27" iMac with 12mb ram and I had to upgrade because the screen resolution won't handle 4k (choppy). Mind you, nothing wrong with shooting in 1080p and it's smoother. Majority of users are still in this range. You can probably work with 2.7k also.  GL!

Are you watching the video from the microSD or you saved it on the Macbook hard disk? And have the Macbook an SSD?

I have a MBPr 15" (2880x1800) and I have absolutely no problem to see a 4K Phantom video, with Quickview (space bar), VLC or Quicktime.
The video is on an FW800 external HD connected to my iMac Thunderbolt so I view it through the Wifi network. My MBPr is an i7 with 16GB Ram.
Being a recent one (mid-2014) I made a test with my son's MBP 15 mid-2012, 8GB Ram i7 which resolution is 1440x900 : also no problem to view a 4K video (which is of course scaled to the screen size)
No need to have a 4K screen to view a 4K video.

I have a older 17" MacBook Pro, and a MacBook Air 13", neither of them play 4K!
I bought a new iMac for the 4K video's. It sucks, but the 4K looks so good it's worth it!!

I have MacBook Pro 17-inch, late 2011, processor 2.5 GHz i7, memory 8 GB, graphics Radeon HD 6770M 1 GB, storage 512 GB SSD, can play 4K footage fine, also can edit it in the Final Cut Pro X without problems

Cant you upgrade the graphics card in your macpro 17" to allow you to play and edit in 4k?

For what it's worth, I have a 2 year old i5 laptop running Windows 7.   4K is very choppy in it as well.   I also have an i7 desktop computer running Windows 10.   It plays 4k smoothly.   The screen resolutions for both is less than 4K

4K is fairly new and requires a bit of horsepower to view.

I don't think the monitor matters, it would depend on the Processor and Video Card..  Just my $0.02 worth.

I had the same issue but then I learned how to edit using proxy files.  These are standard in editing and enables you to edit footage smoothly on the computer and export full quality.

No, an iMac is an all-in-one machine and the video isn't upgradeable barring an external GPU via Thunderbolt.

I had the same issue and absolutely agree Proxy files is the way to go. You can make your edits using half-resolution videos (proxy) then once you're ready to export, use the full resolution. 4k video exported in 1080p looks fantastic.

I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 17" with the 6770 1GB card.  I purchased a Dell U2415 because it matches the laptop in every way - native resolution of 1920X1200 and 16:10 aspect ratio.  The problem is I'm still, just like on the laptop, having to zoom in on everything to scale it to the screen or to do a 1280X720 (think those are the numbers) to get the screen fill I want.  So, I was wondering if I can (or should) get a 4K  P2715 or P2718 so I can scale it down to 1900 X 1080 or 2560 X whatever (forgive me I don't have the numbers memorized) - with the goal being that I would seem CRYSTAL CLEAR AND SMOOTH video and graphics and ESPECIALLY text (hate pixelation).  What is the max refresh rate at the scaled settings?  Does this card even do anything higher than 30hz because even on this 60hz U2415 set at 60hz in the settings with no option to adjust - it looks SO choppy.  OR - should I get the 2K Dell Monitor - which this card supports (not sure what refresh rate it supports though) - but my fear is that I will only be able to scale down 1 drop and I will get a worse resolution than a native resolution that U2415 has.  I just want my page filled and the text and video to sharp and smooth?  All I have is Thunderbolt 1 also.  What do you recommend to accomplish my goal - the Dell 2K or can I do a Dell4K like the ones mentioned to future proof - will the laptop simply connect and work?  Thank you for replying.

I am having the same issue also, I noticed the same on my older Imac 2009 it was very choppy and unsuable but my newer MacBook Pro it was smooth, I think I just record in 1080p, so I can edit on both computers, with the hassle and it takes up less space.

I have a MBP Mid 2014 which I was having the same issue with choppy video.  I had my drone shooting at 24/25 FPS.  When I put it up to 30 FPS it worked and the issue was gone.  The Macbook Pro from 2014 can handle 4k but it gets choppy at the lower frame rate.  What have you been shooting at?

When exporting try changing the Time Interpolation to Optical Flow. This seems to clean up the choppiness of the 4k footage coming from our Mavic 2 Pro
