I have asked the question but have not gotten an answer on this.

I plan on plotting a course this weekend that I know has obstacles. I want to make sure the P4 goes around the obstacles before attempting this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you DJI Quadcopter family.

Bit of a tricky question this. You would think it should be able to do it, but when plotting waypoints you can also face the camera in a different direction to the one you are flying in, so if for example you turned it around 180 degrees, then the obstacle avoidance is not going to work.

So if I hear you correctly, so long as the phantom is pointing in the right direction in way point mode it will fly around objects in its path

No, I don't know the answer. But I suspect when you yaw the aircraft to point backwards, which you can do while flying a waypoint, the avoidance is not going to be any use to you.
