Just a bit of fun thought up while twiddling my thumbs waiting for support to contact me about a crash report.

So how do you do the compass dance - with or without propellors on the aircraft.

Do you ever do one, or do you get someone else to carry the aircraft and do the footwork for you?

I was going to ask if you had calibrated the compass prior to your mishap , or any large metal objects buried in the sand ?

Hi Aardvark

Yes, we'd done a full compass dance with first time calibration accepted immediately before the first flight - one of the composite photos I posted in the support thread shows the position where it was done.

As to something buried in the sand ... always possible, but it'd need to be pretty big (like a buried ship or submarine) to knock the compass as much as happened - you can see from the video and stills that there's nothing causing "lumps" in the sand immediately below where the bird went out of control at just under 60 metres altitude.

Always good to hear people's thoughts on it though - I'm still baffled as to what happened.

You could also ask the question if it's you who does the dance, or do you make the drone dance?
l do full body rotations, props on, so the drone doesn't have to get flung around.

You mean you circle around the phantom instead of the phantom circling you ?

The phantom circles around me, rather than me rotating the phantom in my hands

Interesting that both the places that were used for the drone calibration in those clips would probably have produced compass errors. In the first it is being done on concrete and in the second, near iron fencing.

But but but.....  who is the music for this video.  BTW, my actual calibration happens to be just the way she did it - over my head.  Keeps it away from any metal that might be around.  I certainly don't look as good as she does when I do it!

I also noticed in the second video her calibration method was reversed. We all know you calibrate horizontal 360 axes before the camera face down calibration.

BTW I watched that video 360 times just to verify that was actually the case.

Is it me or has the dance changed with the latest update? If you look at the picture of the drone in the app it is now sideways instead of directly down?

No it doesn't.
The important factor is that the Phantom moves through 360°, not which way it rotates.

Was curious as to why only one of the props was spinning and the other three were not.

I am discussing the same thing on another thread. I Calibrated on my driveway with my phone on the RC and about 20 Ft away from my car, all no no's according to the Manual but I have had great flights!. Freaks me out. I wonder if I should re- Calibrate when I get home.
