Actually that speed is easy to achieve with enough tailwind assuming the onboard GPS measures ground speed which is affected by wind speed.  with enough headwind the bird could be at max throttle and not be moving over the ground.

I'm so absolutely confused with all the aspects of yours post.  You are correct the wind has no effect on ground speed but it does have an effect on objects in the air.

If you have an object flying at 40 mph in the sky under its own power, and you add a 10 mph tail wind that means the wind speed is added to the craft.

Very basic break down.  Take an rc car.  If it can drive 5 mph and you drive it down a conveyor belt moving at 5 mph the car will essentially be moving 10 mph.   It's own speed and external effects as well add on to over all speed.

Hope this helps

everything you said is correct and so was my post.  The difference between True Air Speed (TAS) and Ground Speed (GS) is wind.  If your craft is flying a TAS of 10 (pick any speed measurement; mph, kts, kph, fps...doesn't matter) and the wind speed in the direction of travel (off the nose)  is 10 then the GS will be zero.  Turn the craft 180 degrees so the wind is coming from behind the craft and the TAS of 10 affected by the wind speed off the tail of 10 will give a GS of 20.

For a split second I saw a top speed of 63 mph on my phantom 4 last night with a pretty good tail wind. It was cruising at 60 mph.

You are all crazy. I flew last night and winds were gusting over 20 mph, but I was happy to go up and down and stay in one place. I am getting braver every day though.

Not speed, but related......

We had a very windy day here in KY. Winds were running about 20-25mph with gusts over 40mph. I thought I would try the P4. Amazing how well it worked in those conditions. Held stable very well. My pics and video were pretty darn level. Actually kind of amazing.

Hit 80mph yesterday with a 20-25mph tailwiind.  Couldn't believe how fast it was flying.
Hmm, which do I trust, HealthyDrones or the DJI Go app?  Go app said 80mph, HealthyDrones said 61mph.
