Does fw update reset all settings back to default?  I've only done one fw update and that was when I ...

No they will not go to default.  It is best to write them down though or at least look them over before updating.  Most of the settings are stored in the MC Master Control on the aircraft.  BUT make sure the RTH settings have not changed, I personally go through each page on the General settings to be sure, quite often I notice the Units of measure have changed from Imperial back to Metric.  Be mindful and always double check.  Also you should do a IMU and camera Calibration after a FW update as well.

FYI: IOS re:Go app and RController update.
There is no Go app update (iOS), but the controller will update through the Go app via your Wifi.
The Go app will tell you it needs to update the controller firmware and you need to click on the message and follow the download instructions. Then reboot the controller.
Notes:
After the aircraft update to 1.08, the controller will not completely connect to the aircraft until the controller is updated through the Go app.The Go app may take awhile to bring up the "firmware update needed" message. Mine took several reboots of the app and controller until the message came up.
My download to the controller was super slow and failed the first time. So I truned off the aircraft and pressed Retry. It completed the download super fast the second time.
The delay in displaying the update needed message and the download may be their server is swamped with everyone upgrading at once. (Same thing happens everytime Apple releases a new OS)
I haven't noticed anything odd so far.
Next step - recharge and update the IMU :-)

Updated my P3A about an hour ago.  I updated the GO app first then did aircraft and r/c firmware.

No issues to report, went smoothly.

Gyus) Good news) Reinstall your Go App, next connect to your aircraft and update RC)

Yes, reinstalling the APP
AND
One or two IMU calibrations...

has always fixed upgrade (and other) problems for me.

Perhaps DJI should have some kind of a script built in where it can do this for the pilot since many newbies may have trouble with this sort of thing.

Is there a battery update in this?

There is not a new battery update for the Advanced or Professional.  There is one for the Inspire 1.

Keep in mind you can update new batteries with the latest FW. For example, say you ordered a Battery Pack for the Phantom advanced and it arrived today, you could update the new battery with the latest FW 1.8. and be good.  ( All in one FirmWare )

By the way , Is that Avatar you ?  If so How old?  I always think twice about  my language when I see your post.  I know that I should always keep it clean  but it always makes me think twice .  LOL And by the way, I dont care if your 12  or 89.  You have been a contributing memeber  with good comments and suggestions .  I am just wondering

Thanks Donnie, appreciate the info, and all you do on here.

The avatar is my son, an aspiring RC nut if there ever was one. He's almost 10, and can wheel, well, just about anything. Only thing he can't touch is my 250mm racing drone. That thing is too crazy for him now, maybe a year or two.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave ,Kids are amazing, there reflexes are so much quicker than adults and they absorb things like a sponge .  Wow racing drones , that sure is cool.  When I was younger I liked fast aircraft and fast helicopters now at  52 I am getting to be  kind of laid back and really enjoy the  conservative  flight characteristics of the Inspire and P3P.  I dont  think I could keep up mentally with racing drones,  how  fun that you and your boy are into the same Hobby.  I tried to get my daughter into it , not her cup of tea.  Enjoy your kids now Dave , they will be gone before you know it, busy with there own lives.  My daughter graduates Next month from Michigan State University and Starts Medical School shortly after that . Time will pass quickly is what I am trying to say .  Enjoy them, they are the best thing in your Life !

After updating the app my P3P updated fine, but the RC (GL300B) is failing repeatedly. The red/green/blue light is sitting at light blue and the "RC Update Required" of 1.6.0 sits at 0% failing repeatedly. Any clues?

... Also, it isn't detecting the RC unit (or something). When I hit the Linking RC button it asks me to conform frequency settings, but after that never tries to detect the P3P.

Sharing my experience.

I did 2 updates from March (when I bought it) with the micro sd card method. This time, for the 1.8.80 update I just did it via app. Actually the app told me that there is a new update and I just said "ok" and this was a mistake.

It did the aircraft update. Then I rebooted, it told me I need to update again, so I did and I could see updating 1.6 with 1.6. Guess what, at the end it asked to reboot again and when I turned on, same issue.

I tried to update via sd card. But in the txt log I got:
========== 2014.01.01 00:00:12 remo-con disconnect======

Result: Success.

========== 2014.01.01 00:00:12 remo-con disconnect======
Packet: P3S_FW_V01.06.0040.bin
Result: Abort.
The firmware on the SD card is identical to or older than the current firmware on the aircraft.

========== 2014.01.01 00:00:10 remo-con disconnect======
Packet: P3S_FW_V01.08.0080.bin

Result: Success.

After that I turned it on and got the signal lost issue.

I updated the app. Got again signal lost issue.

I turned off the drone, went to eat a pizza, turned it on, it warmed up and it seems to work now

So maybe the trick if you get the signal lost is to turn off the drone, let it rest a bit, and try again later, who knows that could help. Good luck.

To sum up:

First of all pdate the DJI Go App.
Update the aircraft by putting the firmware in the sd card and turning it on.
Then turn on the aircraft, turn on the remote controller and follow the app instructions to update the remote.
If you have more batteries like I do: leave the firmware on the sd card, switch battery, turn the aircraft on and it'll upgrade that other battery as well.

So after updating the p3p to 1.8 I tried to update the RC via USB directly into RC, didn't work, I then tried to update the RC via USB cable to the drone. didn't work. Then the app said upgrade needed, and it downloaded via my iPhone 6s plus the upgrade and installed it. Now all is good.

Why are the other 2 methods no longer working to upgrade the RC?

Any ideas?

I have a Problem with my brand new phantom 3 pro which was shipped today.
While setting up the bird i was asked to upgrade the firmware by the app.
while doing this the phantom was beeping like 10 minutes so i switched it off and had a look on the SD card. The textfile shows me that the upgrade wasn't successful. (but the app shows the new version 1.8.80) The bird is reacting well on the remote, but i have no picture from the camera on my screen.
Does anyone has an idea? tried to downgrade to 1.7.60 but downgrade failed like the text-file shows

Thanks for your help!

I have a Galaxy S7 Edge. Updates for both the RC and drone went smoothly for me.  I connected my Phantom 3 adv. to my PC via USB cable, extracted the bin file, and copied it to the root of the SD CARD then turned the drone on and let the update complete. The TXT file on the SD card confirmed it was successful. I updated the RC via app successfully as well.

I too found that I could not upgrade the RC. Once I updated the DJI Go app to the latest version today it is unable to connect to the RC. Upgrade directly from the SD Card via the RC does not work and upgrade from by cable between the Phantom and RC does not work either. I was on chat with customer support for well over an hour and they could not resolve it either.

The update can take up to 25 minutes. it will beep fast then after 30 seconds to a minute the beeps will change to 4 beeps DDDD,DDDD,DDDD and the camera light will flash Red/Green. When the firmware is complete, it will go to 3 beeps D-DD,D-DD,D-DD and the camera light will be green. ONLY THEN is when you can power off the aircraft.

That is not good. That shows module 8 and 15 (video transmission modules) are corrupted and it needs to be sent in for repair.
You can try downgrading the firmware but it will probably not work.

Be careful. A firmware update is huge so it's not to be taken lightly. You should recalibrate EVERYTHING after a firmware update. (IMU, Compass and Remote Controller.) DJI strongly advises this as do I. If anyone's craft "flys ok" without doing these things after a firmware update it's just luck but you're temping fate.

Donnie, you are so right! My son's ability to absorb new things, and his total lack of fear of new tech, is mindblowing. He just dives right in. Not that he doesn't get bit now and again, especially when he thinks he knows everything. LOL

So cool about your daughter! You must be so proud you could bust. You done good brother!

I'm 48, and still have that need for speed! The Phantom is great, and the tech is awesome, but sometimes I want full, little bit out of, control. My little speeder gets up to 65+ mph. So fun!

Everything went fine here.
1) updated the Android App (with A/C and R/C off)
2) updated the R/C via App (with A/C off)
3) updated the A/C via SD card (with R/C off)
4) updated every battery by restarting the A/C with the FW SD card consecutively
(The log file on the SD card shows that there were only battery updates done from v1.5 to v1.6. So v1.7 and now v1.8 seem to have the same battery firmware status as v 1.6)

Ken, thanks for checking in. It turns out that my update issue was further complicated (apparently) by an Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) update that took place on my Samsung Galaxy S6. Although I had updated the DJI GO app to the latest 2.7.2, it would not connect to the RC via the cable as it appears that my phone was now seeing it as attempting to charge my phone. I enabled USB debugging for my Samsung S6 and even though the DJI Go app will not automatically launch I can now modify the the default USB charging setting to allow the Go app to be launched.
I am only posting all of this detail should anyone else have the same issue with either thier Samsung S6 or the latest version of Android Marshmallow.
BTW: I like others were not able to update the RC firmware via the SD card or via cable connection to the Phantom. I was also per direction of customer support to do a hard reset of the RC. There updating via the Go app was my only option.
All is good now and everything is working

I'm aware that the aircraft needs to be updated prior to the RC but, before I did that, I wanted to make sure that the RC update was actually  showing as being available in DJI Go.   It isn't!!  I have tried to restart the app (IOS DJI Go V2.7.1) and the RC several times but no update is offered.
Does the aircraft need to be updated before the app will offer the RC update?

EDIT.
All good now. Reinstalled the app and the update is showing.
Aircraft and RC now updated successfully. RC link to Aircraft is good and engines start. Test flight later today.

I too updated to Marshmallow last night and now when you plug in a device you have to swipe down and get the USB settings and select Software installation.Glad you are up and running.

I´ll do my at night, I can see "No problems" if I update the Go App too
My question is: I calibrate ...

Always recalibrate EVERYTHING after a firmware update. Compass, controller and especially the IMU.
