Sure Kevin, I have nothing against Mac's overall. It is just that I see so many new pilots who are accustomed to using a PC ( to foramt SD cards and load FW) and expect the Mac to do the same. For example: When formatting an SD card on a PC it is easy, You just place the Device in the USB slot and ask it to format, It will automatically WIPE 100% OF THE OLD DATA OFF it also recognizes the Size of the SD card. On a Mac, if you dont know what you are doing and have the settings just right it will leave old data on the SD card , this can cause serious problems especially if you were trying to wipe old firmware and load new one to it. The other part of the Mac is that it says formatted, it very may well have but only a Partition has been formatted, with DJI systems , you need to have the Root Directory ( The first thing on the Card ) installed with the new firmware. Also most PC will easily load the Bin file to the SD card with a RAR software built in. The MAC unzips the File amd if you dont Grab just the BIN file you will corrupt the Download.
For me it just gets frustrating, I ask folks not to Format and load FW on the MAC and everyone thinks there Steve Wozniak . ( NOT YOU ) and then they come back to me and say I'm stuck. I really enjoy helping but I dont see any MAC users here on the forum saying let me guide you through the settings of the MAc to show how to do it properly. So , for me, It is just better to say at the very least FORMAT THE SD CARD ON THE AIRCRAFT , ( ON THE GO APP, UNDER THE TOOL SETTING OF CAMERA ) and then only DOWNLOAD THE BIN file which will auto unzip when you open the file. I think formatting is the biggest problem on the MAC. I did hear of a New APP for the MAC called SD formatter for MACS that is supposed to wipe them 100% this is the result of all the problems Mac users have with this topic.
I love my apple I-pad by the way, I think it is the best device for the GO APP. I just dont understand what MACS reasoning is to format just a small section of file and then tell the User "Formatted " when it really is not. ( I dont own a MAC so i dont know the exact process, i only know that users say the MAC says that the SD card is formatted and wiped when indeed it is not. )
Once again I want to re-iterate many users of MAC's can download and format on a MAC no problem. I just dont know what the procedure is. And until that point in time , I am going to advise new users to use a PC. It is usually the New Pilots that have the Problems and they have no idea where the download went wrong, with a little detective work there is usually a MAC in there somewhere or they have downloaded the wrong FW because ( And it is stupid ) The numbers are all the same and there is very little difference between the advance Phantom page and the pro Phantom page for downloads, or Pro Inspire or Inspire one .
I hope this helps and I am NOT Mac bashing, DJI firmware and the SD format process do not go together, play it safe and use a PC or experiment with formatting a SD card on the MAC and then test on a PC. Maybe you can be the one to make a tutorial of how to load with a MAC. UNFORTUNATLY the problem will still be there because most new pilots are so excited and pissing there pants to fly that they skim the manual ( IF THAT EVEN ) and then wonder what went wrong and it must be DJI's fault !! Also just know I dont work for DJI, I just come here to help fellow pilots when I have extra time. I enjoy paying it forward and remeber when I was a new pilot, the milllion questions I had. So Here I am.....
Good Luck, sorry to ramble- donnie |
