Yes, it very well might have been solved that way, but it is a bit extreme. It is like saying you had a flat tyre on your car and it was solved by buying a new car. The problem is in the optics. and should be solved by careful cleaning.
However, one point to keep in mind, is the chromatic aberations caused by the sensor's high sensitivity to blue light. Hence the issue shown on the photo of the Audi with its lights on, and the street lamps in the dock scene above. In both situations, the illuminating source has a strong blue content, due to the type of light source.
