I went flying today over a frozen/melting  lake.  Distance was 3500 feet. Is this  normal .. could i go further. No loss of signal. Are signals bouncing off ice... any thoughts

Radio signals will perform better over water/ice.  That said,  you must have gotten lucky and got a good Standard to get that range, especially if it is stock.

Great distance if stock, never over 1000 ft. with my std, DBS MOD for $100 on my bird now and I get over 13000 ft. like night and day....

Man I wish I had that, I'm stuck at 300m. Which is rather odd as I used to be able to get a good 900m and then all of a sudden I cannot. definitely thinking about a DBS mod

Thats incredable distance

It since stock.. I average 2300 ft.
