I believe DJI has decreased range performance because they want to be able to tell the FAA that software/firmware keeps their product within VLOS. It is like their software/firmware keeps us from even starting our UAS inside class D airspace or within a control zone.

Don't shoot me if this is incorrect but I have just completed my UAV controller certificate and during the training our instructor told us to ignore the distance figure claimed in the specifications. In Australia due to transmitter regulations here they have less power than unit purchased for other countries.

You are partially correct.
The controller is identical to all countries, however the GPS data is used to determine which power output to use. In Aus, I believe, CE is used for the approved legal output limit, FCC for other none European countries.

How can you say that it was in the wrong frequency? I thought the Frequency range of the RC controllers were at the 2.4GHz (2400 MHz) to 2.483 GHz (2483 Hz)
