Recorded my first sporting event, a criterium in Edmonton...I learnt a lot as trying to capture this type of event is much more complicated than filming landscapes which is what I usually do. I think I'll be doing many more races!
Some key points I came away with...
-Arrive early to pre fly the course, I would have followed the riders all the way around the course if I had pre flown so I know the course better (interference etc)
-Talk to the officials prior and let them know what you are doing, give them contact info...they may actually give you better access so you can pick a better area to fly from.
-Bring a business cards with your Vimeo/YouTube account as many will want to view you footage after and it's easier to just hand them a card than explaining things while you're flying.
-Get in closer to the action without flying directly over the riders or course (preflight), people love to see themselves.
-Don't forget your filter case...I was in a hurry and forgot mine and the bird had an ND16 on it which was way to dark for the lighting this day
-Bring all your batteries and or setup a charging station if need be. I only brought six batteries but I have 10 and could have easily used the other four this day. |
