Hello all!

So I found a nice big space just down the road and took my first flgiht today. I was amazed by how easy the P3A is to fly! I am a totoal novice and managed to get it doing some nice pans and orbits. Stayed in beginner mode and that really helped my confidence. I did have a question about video. I have found the 1080p plays back pretty choppy in both VLC and QUick time (I'm a Mac user) any ideas?

Cheers!

It'll be choppy because your Mac isn't up to playing it.  How old is the Mac?  Much RAM?  Full hard disc?

MBP 16 GBRAM and playing from SSD, granted its only a two core machine but it should be able to play 1080p no problem. I cut the video in FCPX and uploaded to Youtube and its fine now other than the fact Youtube seems to has effected the quality in areas. I'm about to post the link in the video section of the forum if you are interested

Mine's a MBP (mid 2012), 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, 512 GB SSD. Works fine with 1080P & only gets choppy with 4K using VLC or Quicktime.

Yours should work fine going by the specs.

Dunno, but I use .MOV as it's apparently better for editing.  I haven't tried .MP4

Could it be the OSX version?  Mine's El Capitan 10.11.4

Edit: Thinking about it, is you file straight from the P3?  Mine are exported to 1080p from 4K in Quicktime so it might be to do with compression.

60 FPS might be the problem.  Twice as many frames = twice as much data.  Just output to 30 FPS.  Not sure if you can do it in Quicktime or iMovie.
Also, exporting to 1080p from Quicktime lowers the bitrate so will also help.

If you are looking for a good FREE converter, search for Handbrake. It is excellent. I shoot in 4K, but then convert to 1920x1080 for editing due to PC limitations. I have an i7 with 8GB RAM and 4K is jumpy when it plays, but HD plays nice. This way you have original files still in 4K that can be edited when the computers catch up to the video data speeds. Happy Flying!

Hello Jakk, if the video is still choppy, feel free to post a public dropbox link of the original video here. I'll try to play it in Windows.

Thanks for your reminding.Maybe it is better to use another PC or Mac with higher performance.

Mac's like the MOV setting. What are you using to accomplish your playback? You may have an issue there in regard to memory and speed.

So I recorded again in 1080p 30f .MP4 and the video is buttery smooth. So it was either the frame rate or the .MOV recording. I have plenty of RAM and an SSD but low cores and not the best graphics card so its probably something to do with that. I plan to upgrade to a 15inch in a few months any way so Im just glad its not something to do with the P3. Cheers guys!

It's not that much of a problem in my eyes.  It doesn't stop you editing the video, only playing it back.  Do you have a TV with a USB port?  If yes, you can load the file onto a memory stick & play it directly on the TV.  My Samsung TV does this, although it doesn't support the higher frame rates.

It won't be the fie codec. The vast majority of choppy playback complaints are to do with a mismatch between the frame rate you shoot at and the monitor's refresh rate. So you're best off shooting 30fps for a 60hz monitor - they're obviously multiples of each other
