There's a freeway bridge I'd like to fly the length of under and it has a nice clearance of about 10m between the uprights so crashing should not be a issue. But then I thought what happens if RTH is triggered while it's under there? Pretty much screwed right?

Any advice or stories from pilots that have flown beneath things?

If you want to fly underneath a thing like a bridge then make sure you to position yourself to have unobstructed signal from anything.

If the drone goes up, high chance of crashing especially if you get no signal.
If you just push RTH, you can still counter that.

Well my view is unobstructed, I'm standing beneath the bridge on one side looking down the length of it, but can't be 100% on the signal, with bridges having metal in them and all.

I figured if the signal was obstructed the RTH failsafe would kick in but the lowest altitude you can set for RTH is 20m... which could be pushing it.

Remember CASA rules - need to keep 30m clear of structures.

Setting the lost signal options in the Dji Go app to     hover    would prevent the Inspire from rising and hitting the overpass if signal was lost.

I have always wanted to fly under bridges but never have, I don't think it's worth the risk. I saw a video on u tube were a guy flew under a bridge and had recover his drone from the water.

Simply change the RTH settings .  Use caution , there is a lot of metal under that bridge and that makes the compass go wacky, perhaps be in Atti mode and keep the aircraft close by.  Just proceed with caution.  You at least cared enough to ask questions, that is a good sign of a smart pilot.

Since you will be flying under CASA rules will you also not need the permission of the bridge owner/authority as well?

YUP! You are! your Phantom is going to take the most direct route home. I wouldn't let it get that far away so you wouldn't have to use RTH. If you are making a Video you could do it a section at a time and put it all together in Post.

It would be a very cool shot, but I'm leaning toward playing it safe. There's just a few too many risks.

I have my CASA controllers Cert, but I'd thought I'd see what you guys think before asking for approval to fly there.

Keep the radio and aircraft LOS at all times with GPS turned off (Atti mode) You will need to fly it and not count on the GPS for holding your position. As long as the radio signal is not blocked  between you and the Inspire......you should be okay, but is always a risk. This will not let the Inspire go into RTH function while in Atti mode.

If you can get close enough to the structure that you will be flying under and disable the RTH function during that flight.....Just a thought.

Only if you fly within 30 meters.

Which the OP would be since the uprights are 10m apart!

And isn't 30m for take off and landing only - 50m at all other times?

Just use Att. mode, and change the RTH to home settings to hover.
Try to fly has low has possible, in a way that you can fly under but away from the top.

No, 30 meters clear across the entire flight.
Depends upon what course the OP intended to fly.
Would need to stay clear of the uprights, deck structure and surface and superstructures.
