I’m considering purchasing a Phantom 4, whilst I have 30 years of RC experience I am a total newbie with drones.

  
  

I have noted that the P4 has a max ceiling of 500 meters above take-off point.

  

I live on the top of a mountain 400mm above sea level,  I was wondering how the drone software would cope with my taking off at 400m ASL flying to 900m ASL (500m from take-off point) and flying out from the peak towards sea level.

  
  

Can I assume that the drone will continue at 900m ASL as its only 500m above take off point?

The phantom has no understanding of sea level.
All heights are relative to its launch point.

Yeah wherever you launch the Drone it will see a 0 feet so if you're 400 feet or two thousand feet above sea level you will be able to go 500 meters above wherever you take off and if you go below that like off a cliff it'll show up - feet

Very nice.The P3 service ceiling is 6000m.
