You're bringing up something I was wondering about. That is, how necessary is it to update frmware? If the version I have now seems to work fine, why risk an update? Are there consequences I'm not aware of e.g., that to not do so will invalidate warranty or DJI Care?

If you get the voice saying "your home point has been updated" does that guaruntee the compass is calibrated since you are also prompted to check your point on the map.

U do all correct. Calibrate before every flight. "Home point  has been updated" doesn't harangue anything

The answer to both of your questions are no. If you don't update the FW it's not going to have a negative impact on your warranty, not sure about "DJI care" that might have more fine print. Next, you do not and should not do a compass cal on each and every flight. Regardless of what the manual says, and the corp reps might just have to quote the manual as it's their company. Get a good compass cal, one you know works well and stick with that. You could re-calibrate the compass that was just fine and undo a good calibration. Lastly, no just because you get a good "Home Point" marked has nothing to do with the compass, that's the GPS.

Doesn't really prove anything, they're probably always testing new FW and updated FW will always be in the pipeline on the Phantom 3's for awhile.

if something works, do not try to fix it.
DJI advice is to use the latest firmware,
but if you have no problems, I would not upgrade now.
just wait until a new improved firmware comes and then upgrade.
1.6.8 brings far only misery and frustration ...

I have now been updated 2 times out of the box, and both gave a lot of problems. (update 1.6.8)
Now I got a new one with firmware 1.2.40+ and no update directly from the box. no problem at all.
The drone does what he must do, flying ....No signal lost, no disconnected wifi, no compas errors. and a great range...

but that's my opinion.

{edit: After the last repair they replaced the Gimbal/Camera may be is the problem the gimbal connection or something...}

Thanks for the clarification. I thought the compass and the GPS were the same. So at the risk of sounding pretty stupid, what is the function of the compass?
Also I was wondering if you flew the p3 without getting the updated homepoint message and then hit the RTH in flight, the aircraft would flyoff toward the previously recorded homepoint?

GPS tells the drone where it's at in the world, the compass tells it which way it's facing (which way is front).

Thank you. The follow up question is: Other than transmitting its orientation to the app for a visual, does it serve another function? Put another way why do GPS quads have a compass and non GPS quads don't.

Question How do I prevent auto update on P3S? I took my phantom out and had crappy connection as far as video and range at 50 meters. I discovered my firmware had changed to 1.6.8. I downgraded to 1.5.70 and my phantom flies to my max settings of 250 meters and 120 meters altitude.
