What about the new Spark? That's also being shown as a pathetic 500 meters in CE? Yet unrestricted its meant to be capable of over a mile?
What's going on?
The Spark uses Wifi. As already stated, WiFi is inferior technology compared to DJI's Lightbridge or OcuSync, which rocks. Wifi is cheap to implement because of the chips available for laptops/tablets can be used. However, although the majority of drone manufacturers use it, Wifi communications was not invented for drone video communications from air to ground. It was created for the general purpose use for computers on the Internet, which include banking and finance, where TCPIP protocol insures 100% of the data sent was in fact received, complete, and accurate. This takes lots of handshaking in the process.
This handshaking is why WiFi takes so long to connect with the drone, and reconnect if disrupted during flight, compared to Lightbridge. DJI invented Lightbridge to remove all that unnecessary handshaking, using more of a broadcast method that is simply, clean, and effective, more resistant to interference than plain old WiFi.
Non FCC areas will be regulated to CE power output, which will result in less range, regardless if it's WiFi or Lightbridge. Those who live in a countries that aren't FCC regulated, will have less range. There are ways to mitigate the CE disadvantage if you search YouTube, "Phantom Parameters CE", but making these changes will void your warranty. |
