I'm a newbie with a Phantom 4 and not much experience dealing with video editing, playback etc. After taking some 4K videos with the Phantom 4, I wanted to transfer the original footage to my iPhone 6s and iPad mini 4.

I bought a lightning to SD card camera reader and copied the videos to my devices Photo App. However, when I go to play the videos it tells me it's an "Unsupported Video Format"?

An suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Help lol

You cannot do much with a 4K clip on an iPhone, it does not have the resources to handle it. If you just want to see what the clip looks like, then view the low resolution cached copy. If you want a good quality replay, copy the file onto your computer and view it there. Even so, you will need a display that can handle 4K.

Thank for the quick response Geebax. So what would be the high resolution I can record video at that will play on my Apple devices?

I had the same issue in that I don't have anything that will play 4K content and didn't see the point of downscaling. I now record in 1080 60 fps as 180 looks heavily sw processed but I'm happy with what I get.
Happy flying

I cannot say, as it depends upon what model of Apple device you have. You would need a pretty big screen to handle 4K though.

Actually there is no 'right resolution' for 'editing' on a phone or tablet: these devices are just to weak to handle these big amounts of data. I understand that less and less especially young guys use desktops these days and want to do really everything on their handhelds but, besides the unusable small screen for real editing video, these devices just can't handle the load, for now. Maybe in the future some day and if you can then wirelessly connect to a bigger display...but then you can as well use an 'oldfashioned' desktop.

Just as a thought the iPhone 6s plus records true 4k video, which it then scales to 1080P (native resolution of display) for playback.

I have an IPhone 6s 64 Gig. However, it still won't play the 4K videos I've taken with my Phantom 4. Thought it would being 4K and all.

That being said, I have no problem setting the resolution down to UHD or HD.

I have no desktop and my laptop runs at turtle speed so my best device for video editing is going to be my iPad mini 4.

For those out there using apps for editing, what's the best app one out there to use; free and not free?

Hi:
I think I know what the problem is. In the DJI Go app you have to select record in MOV instead of MP4. Recently I change the recording format and the same message appear in my iPhone. So for Mac and IOS devices the MOV is the way to go. I hope this help you.

Actually .MOV is an Apple invention and is the native format for all Apple products.

I've just checked and the 6s plus will play .mp4 DJI files streamed from my network drive.

I've just checked the spec, and this is common to both 6s and 6s plus

For reference, my iPad Pro 9.7 can import, view, edit, and export video in full 4k with no lag or stuttering.

For clarity you may be able to edit and view a certain format or resolution of video but even on the ipad pro it isnt 4k.  The ipad pro's screen is 2048x1536 which is still significantly short of 3840 required for 4k

Both iPad Mini 4 and iPhone 6S has the ability to playback 4K video with the following settings:
H.264 video up to 4K, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.2 with AACLC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz

The 4K video shot by DJI Phantom 4 is shot with the following specification:
up to 60 Mbps  4K video in a MOV wrapper with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression codec
DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) frame rate: 24p, 25p
UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) frame rate: 24p, 25p, 30p

Incompatible frame rate or bit rate will also cause playback errors of DJI Phantom 4 4K on iPad Mini 4 or iPhone 6S.

i didnt try 4k on ipad air but i guess it should work (netflix 4k works). the best of viewing to me is via a usb reader straight into the 4k tv. if that is not an option for you, then usually the pc handles 4k pretty well.

On iPhone you can review the live feed, which is 720i. Resolution is good enough for small screen. I usually take the sd card out of the drone, use the USB adapter and see the 4K video directly on smar tv

Sry all, duplicated the post by mistake.
