Not discounting the article, nor the site it was published on...  It seems to be a testimonial for DartDrones.  I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between.  Although, I'll bet their course couldn't hurt!

Completed my FAA part 107 exam today. Scored a 73% with little studying (to be truthful, I do hold a commercial pilot certificate). Took me 45 minutes.

Lots of questions on airspace, weather reports (learn to read the TAR on page 15 of the testing supplement, up/down, front and backwards)
Learn to pick out your BCDE airspaces from aeronautical charts (bottom and ceiling)
Aeronautical decision making; lots of questions on this.

Finished it. I was thinking that a lot of the people that have had no former ground school or pilot training will struggle with some of the questions to the point that they may not pass.

I passed the exam with a 77%. I have no background in aviation. I have been flying drones for 2+ years now. DartDrones.com study helped me a lot with concepts that are otherwise foreign. I will say the test was not easy and not to be taken lightly. Very excited to use my new certificate with my Matrice 600!

What is the minimum passing grade?

Minimum passing grade is 70.  I took it yesterday and scored an 88.  I've been a private pilot since 1993 but I'm not currently active (way too expensive to fly these days), so since I don't have a current biennial flight review I took the Part 107 test at a test center.

Let me assure anyone considering it: this test is no joke.  There is an enormous emphasis on reading navigation charts and determining airspace.

There will be questions like this one (this is similar but not identical to an actual question): "Refer to the navigation chart in Figure X.  Locate the tallest radio tower four nautical miles southeast of XYZ airport.  Would you need FAA authorization to fly at the maximum permissible altitude above the radio tower?"  The correct answer turns out to be "Yes, because you are entering Class B airspace."  This requires not only that you know you can fly up to 400' above a structure but also understanding the chart symbols and notations to determine the resulting altitude, then realizing that flying 400' above the radio tower puts you roughly 100' above the floor of Class B airspace surrounding an airport several miles away.

Another question asks something like "Refer to Figure ABC.  If the tower at XXX airport is closed, what radio frequency must you tune to in order to monitor aircraft communications at this airport?"  When you find the airport there are numerous radio frequencies listed and you need to know the symbol that indicates the CTAF frequency that will be used if the tower is closed.  (Don't know what CTAF means?  You may not be ready to take the test yet).

The notations on sectional charts are arcane and there were at least 20 questions involving such charts, along with lots of other questions on Part 107 issues (total of 60 questions, NONE of which were giveaways).  I normally ace multiple-choice tests, including very difficult ones.  I consider 88 a very low score (although it was more than passing) - and I did a lot of prep for the test, AND had the private pilot background.

Keep in mind that tests are dynamically created from a bank of thousands of questions, so your questions may not include anything like the two examples above.  I'm just using them to illustrate the level of difficulty you can anticipate.

I found the level of security at the test center almost astonishing, as though I was obtaining authorization receive the nuclear codes.  Our test center was only large enough for three candidates.  It was on constant recorded video and audio surveillance, with the proctor outside the room watching the monitors.  We were not allowed to bring anything into the test room - no scratch paper, no pens, no pencils, no calculators, nothing.  The test center supplied three pencils and scratch paper.  A calculator was built into the test software.  There were big signs warning about all the "MUST NOT's."  We were told if we exited the room to use the bathroom without authorization we would instantly fail.  We were allowed to say only two things aloud: "I need a break" or "Test Completed."  Anything else would result in a fail.  If you needed a break you said so and the proctor would escort you to the bathroom and back.

Take it seriously, do a lot of preparation including learning to read sectional charts, and you should do fine.

Just took the test this morning and O BOY did a flunk the test.Only three to four questions I remembered from the studies. Having to pay another $150 is whats killing me.
Now my two thoughts. I belive that the FAAhas made it hard to get the certificate  to discurage thousand that are geting the license just to get it and not folow the rules. Those that are serious about this carrier will study hard and if the fail, pay another $150and study harder.

I did take the test yesterday, and spent a lot of time flipping to, and reading the sectional charts.    I have no aviation experience and have never flown a drone, but passed with an 85%.
The test was harder than I expected, and I missed at least one or two answers by giving the Part 101 answer rather than the Part 107 answer.   (Which drones need to be registered?  For Part 107, even drones under .55 lbs have to be registered!)
I missed another by messing myself up on time conversions.
There were several questions that tested multiple knowledge items in one.
Get to know the Sectionals - Remember there is a key to reading the sectionals near the front of the reference book you are given for taking the test.
I finished in about 45 minutes, there is no need to rush in taking the test.

Not really.  The tests are privately administered.  The company that administers them, that provides the space, pays for the required surveillance equipment, that provides the proctor to supervise, is entitled to be paid every time its facilities are used.  It's not THEIR fault if someone needs a retest, and they should not be required to provide time, facilities and resources without compensation.  If the FAA administered the tests directly I might have a different opinion, but they can't force private companies to provide service for free.

Took my test on Monday.  92%.  It did take just over 30hrs to get my test uploaded to the FAA.  Got my Temp Cert today.  Not too bad.  I am a Private Pilot with Instrument rating but not current.  Like some stated above, it's been too expensive to fly manned aircraft.  For those of you who are not familiar with this information, a company that provides study material in aviation called ASA Aviation does have a UAV study guide/practice test for Part 107.  They have several methods both online, ebook and hard cover.  They have practice tests as well.  Check it out.  Do not take this test lightly.  I expect many will be surprised at the level of difficulty.  I will say the ASA study guide and test, which I used, will cover everything you need to know to pass the test.  No I do not work for them.  Just trying to help.  Maybe save someone having to retest for another $150.

The specific questions will change but the topics will not - each test is likely to have roughly the same number of chart questions.  They'll just be different ones.  It's clear that the FAA is putting a huge emphasis on knowing where you can and can't fly.

I've got my multi, commercial, Instrument so does this mean I'll have an additional addon to my actual license? I wonder if they will mail me a new plastic pilot license with the rating added. Type Ratings don't go on it so I don't know. My buddy asked me if we get to log UAV time as flight time to bump up the total flight time in our log book. lol I can't imagine trying to log any of this stuff with no airports to put in the logbook.

I'm not current. So, I'm taking the test in the morning. Been using the Prepware Remote Pilot App to study. I keep getting around an 80 on their test. I hope its not missing something, lol. I'm also doing the medical before the test. Did you all do the medical. I'm doing Second Class. I don't think I need a First Class, right?

I have my PP-ASEL but no current BFR so I took the test under Part 107.  Although the Part 107 and PP-ASEL certificates are both associated with my FAA account it appears that they will be separate certificates.  I won't know for certain until the permanent card arrives - for now I just have the Temporary Airman Certificate for Part 107.

No Medical is required under Part 107.  Operators self-certify.

I sincerely doubt you can log the time because you are flying as RPIC, which is different from PIC.

I ended up taking it today and passing with an 80%. I studied all the material and used a couple different Youtube videos to fill in the gaps (G and E airspace, Sectional charts). I didn't have any prior knowledge of most of the material but can definitely see why it is all important to know. I will say that the main parts that tripped me up personally, were the questions on what I considered minor stuff (CRM and which handbooks to find different info). All in all it was a good experience. Just take the time you need to prepare, you can always reschedule until you feel ready. Good luck!

Your best route is to go on the FAA website and get all the training material from there. There aren't any real shortcuts to the test or studying. You have to go over all the material and get to know it really well. With that said, I'm sure that training course you mentioned has a lot of great information. $300 is a lot to spend though (when you can find it all for free) and in my experience, some of the questions are lines right out of the material. Not sure it would be exactly the same out of the course.
