Actually my dream job was to became a pilot but situations in life turn me to other career. One thing I know is that a pilot has to trust your instruments. And for that reason I'm always very precautious with calibrations of all systems of the P4. Since I get my P4 last month, I started like you. Then by the third flight I doubled the distance of the first two flights. And by the eight flight did my first flight over water. The other thing that will help you to understand your P4 behavior is reviewing your flight logs. In my flight over water, I had a scary moment because my P4 doesn't respond to descend like I was hoping. I panicked for a moment and press the RTH. When I review the flight I realize that the reason of the slow response was 19 knots wind gust and 200 ft. Now I know one of many things I can do to descend at a faster rate. Once you understand how it behaves you will know what things you can or you can't do.

Great video.  I have been to Salinas and all over the Island.  It is truly a magnificent place and one that most Americans don't appreciate.  San Juan is NOT what that Island is all about!  My P4 is arriving here Monday and I'm excited but nervous as well.  One place I have been to and even many Puerto Ricans don't know of it is Charco Azul.  I was there late in the afternoon with not a soul around - just amazing.

I'm a bit curious though what the reasoning is behind the fear of flying over water, or in any really open space for that matter?

First off, the Phantoms (3/4) are widely viewed as one of the easiest drones to fly, mainly due to the GPS lock capabilities and now you also have the Computer Vision feature of the P4 making even more 'safe'.  

Second off, if you aren't flying around structures and trees, and the weather is fine, then when you really think about it, 95% of the risk of any mishap is really going to be attributed to equipment failure which once in the air, you really can't do a whole lot about (depending on the type of failure.) Now notice I didn't say 100% because there can always be exceptions to the rule but I'm talking from a practical and realistic viewpoint here.

Probably the highest risk of user error would be involved with the landing and you have to land the thing on land whether you fly over water or not.  I suppose if you have a bad crash, it would be nice to be able to recover the wreckage as opposed to go for a swim. LOL.

I flew over water around a marina and down a shoreline my second flight and I greatly preferred it because (a) I didn't have to worry about structures, and (b) I didn't have to worry about flying over people - both of which are MAJOR concerns in many of the other places I can fly.  

In other words, I'm the opposite.  I'm a lot more relaxed flying over water.  I do admit the idea of a 'splash down' concerned me, but then I figured, if I have a major failure the thing is going to be most likely destroyed anyway whether I'm over water or not.

The reason is very simple. I know the P4 is a great piece of technology but when you read so many threads about how many people crash or lose their drones, simply get you the chills. One thing I learn is to know how the P4 works. Now that I understand it, I'm more confident to fly it anywhere. For that reason, I lost my fear.

I'm glad you like my video, thanks! The flight was at 423 ft. High and the farthest from me was 3,064 ft. The total flight was 7875 ft. long and that took only 7:30 min.

Beatiful film but i am not yet afraid. I bought a phantom 4. I have seen videos on youtube of Drones with six props. As of 6 props one engine fails, they can still fly back to the starting position. But if that happened to my 4 Phantom, he crashes and I need to buy a new one. I live with that fear, but is this true or can be made in an emergency landing next to the water. I am very afraid of that time and do not know when it happened and I do not know what I should do.
I hope sombody have an answer?

Hello my friend. I used the Polar Pro Filters. They are made specially for the P4 with the perfect weight and constrution quality. Simply, they are great. About the camera settings was Style-none , Color-none. With this settings you can make some post production edits more easily if you like. I'm not a Pro photographer or nothing close. I just take some tips from this guy in You Tube ( Tom's Tech Time) that are excellent.

Funny my friend just bought a Yuneec Typhoon H and he was saying its way better than my Phantom 4. I was like whatever...I highly doubt it. He flew it for the first time today and it randomly spazzed and fell out of the sky on him. xD LOL

Wow. That's really bad luck. I was close to make the same error. I was about to buy the Typhoon H but when I start to read some reviews then I change my mind and choose the P4.

I really appreciate you like my video.  Thank you! I'm not an expert with camera settings but I get the great info from Also I have this cinema quality ND filters from polar pro. Finally, you with your editing software finish the video. I hope this help you.

Thank You! I'm very happy that you like it. The farthest distance was 2,400m at an altitude of 128m. Yes I used a Polar Pro ND4 filter.

Ordered the mavic. The trepidation in my mind is losing the unit to the wind, distance etc. thanks for the post. Makes me feel a little better
