Assuming I don't plan to charge anyone $$$$, What is the advantage of my getting my "license" vs. just flying as a hobbiest?

It's really for those who want to charge money. With that said, there is a good amount of useful information in studying for it though. You could go over the material without taking the exam and save yourself $150. Really your call.

Like Drew said, it's only if you plan to make any sort of income from flying. The $5 registration is plenty for hobbiests.
