I'm new to drones, so I feel like I'm missing something here - but I see the max range is 4.3 miles most places, yet on the Mavic's official specs page it says 8?!?  I'm confused.  I do notice one is for the controller (4.3mi), but what does the 8mi signify?

It can't fly 8 miles away from your controller, but the maximal flight range is 8 miles. So for example you can fly it in a giant circle around you, as long as the total trip is not more than 8 miles.

Bingo - that's the answer I was looking for.  Thank you.  Now, why 8 miles?  Is that the max it can fly on a battery charge?

Max. flight time 27 min at 15.5 mph. That's 7 miles. Doesn't add up completely somehow...

Correct, the max total distance it can cover is 8 miles

That's calculating the max flight time endurance, not max total distance endurance.
Fly faster=less flight time but further overall travelled distance.

Does anybody know if the Mavic has a built-in altitude limitation (firmware or otherwise). I am on the verge of pulling the trigger on one, but I need to find out this first. The specs sheet only states the absolute service ceiling, which is something else.

So the Mavic claims a 4 mile range with at least 720p of video, but under what kind of use case is this range? Really interested if there is a real world review of its range capabilities. For example will I be able to take off from a spot near me, fly 2 miles away, land on a parking lot, and fly back?...with normal obstructions between me and 2 miles away like buildings, trees, and small hills.

With this being an improvment over traditional 2.4Ghz wifi bands I highly doubt this would be the case. Best case you can go somehwere near 4 miles away in a perfect LOS case, where the drone has to be in a perfect visual cone in front of you. Drop below the treeline/LOS and your screwed. I hope im wrong and this Ocusycn tech is truely revolutationary.

Thoughts?

(and I understand that drones should always be flown in LOS, so lets keep discussion to purley hypothetical range scenarios).

Well, if the drone has video transmission when it lands, you will be able to start it and fly it. Probably not a parking lot, something like a hill or roof would do.

The 27 minutes is really 21 minutes in normal use and down to 19 on sport mode distance flights

Make it 65 kmh and 19 minutes.

The inspire tb48 says 22 but it really only does
18 but it can do 100 kmh at 16 mins for distance flights.

I can see the Mavic from a distance of 8 miles too.  

Just remember, all specs are under ideal conditions.  Throw in wind and/or heavy throttle use, quick moves, and everything starts dropping.
