The neighbors started their fall corn harvest so I had to get some shots. I actually did this for them so it's quite a bit longer than most of the stuff I post. (Amateur Video).

Token,

Thank you. The flying was the fun part! Went through about 10 P3P batteries that day.

Aloha Jtr,

Who would have thunk harvesting corn could be so interesting.  Nice video.  So, what happens to the cobs?  Do you know of a link that could show me how it all works?  Love the loading and going at the same time.

During the whaling age the Hawai'ians had it down.  They put whale blubber rendering iron pots in the middle of vast wetlands of Loi (taro fields).  They cleaned off the leaf and stalk matter and let it dry.  Then they used the dried plant matter to boil water from the Loi in the iron pot and put the Kalo (taro root) into the boiling water for processing.  (Unboiled Kalo is poisonous.)  Then they replanted the Keiki (baby Kalo) for the next crop and hauled out only the processed Kalo.  Extremely efficient and this is in the early 1700s.

Nice work, and good subject. It held my interest, I watched it all the way through. I am guessing the corn is not left in cobs by the harvester?

Cetaman,

Thanks for watching! I'm not a farmer so I can't answer your questions very well. What I was told is that this corn will be used to feed cattle. It was harvested a bit earlier than normal for this purpose and contains about 30% moisture. It is piled, packed and covered with tarps and old tires to keep the weather out.  Maybe we have some farmers here that could elaborate a bit more. The whole process is quite interesting.

Geebax,

Thanks! I believe the cobs are chewed up and spit out the back of the combine (best guess based on all of the stuff coming out the back).

Aloha Jerry,

Any information would help.  It looks like a very interesting process.  I wonder what the de-husker system looks like or if there is one.  We shuck our own homegrown corn here.  Did you now that 80% of the seed corn in the US comes from Hawai'i.  We have three growing seasons.
