I have been flying under a 333 waiver before Part 107 and now am licensed under 107. I am an aerial videographer. We carry insurance and it is about a grand a year. Factor in needing to own more than one drone as a back-up, many batteries, insurance and have the skills to actually make something look decent, the editing software, making a living with a drone is hard work. Now, factor in all the folks who will fork out a thousand for a Phantom and go get a license and then do the old give it away to get exposure routine, I'm rather skeptical that I would recommend one to go make the investment with the expectation of making a living at it. Even if you are flying as a hobby, it is important to know that most homeowner or general liability policies exclude damage caused by an aircraft, so I think it is important to have some sort of insurance that covers RC aircraft unless one has the cash in the bank to self insure. It's part of the overhead, but my clients require me to carry insurance. |
