Not impressed, why is it an advertised mode when the hardware cannot run these frame rates ?

What do you mean the hardware cannot run it?  Are you saying the sensor on the mavic cam can not properly pull 1080 / 60, but can shoot 4k?  That seems odd to me, but I don't have one yet, so....  Thanks.

I used 1080/60 with no problem. That is my preferred mode. The videos in my blog post were shot at that.

This is from RCG....

"Unfortunately, 1080P60 and P96 are both binning modes. That means the sensor will down sample the signal by a simple averaging, something like (1+1)/2, which is not an optimal anti-aliasing filter. In this case, the frequency through the lens is much higher than the sensor can handle. Therefore, aliasing happens before the processor acquires the signal.

This happens on our x5 series as well. I would stick with other modes and stay away from 1080P60/96 if you want the best output"

I did try 50p today and it was a real mess. Seems we are ok up to 30fps but that's it !

It is true that the Mavic is not at it's best in 1080/60 - that is reserved for the upcoming goggles.....

The takeaway is to use 30fps for most video - in any of the resolutions. I used 1080/30 today and it is as good (or better) than the 1080/60 in the review.

So this aliasing is not correctable That's hugely disappointing for me. I was intending to use 1060p60 most of the time as I want to film fast moving things. Unless I can correct for this is PP it doesn't look good...

i'm really disappointed on this 1080p video quality.

i think thats the neckbracker for me and the mavic

or should i record in 4k at only 30fps and downscale it later to 1080p by some editing software?
becouse i would not buy a phantom 4, the mavic has still this greath portability

i saw this video on youtube and there is no aliaising. videodiscription says 1080p/60fps. its this a mavic footage or a fake?

The sensor is capable of 4k60, so what gives?  The IMX377 (Mavic) is the "new" IMX117 (Phantom 4).  Perhaps this is where the H.264 CODEC limitations are felt!!!

Not asking for variable pitch props or audio here, just the capability to capture high-quality video.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but from what I read in the PDF Ken posted it sounds like the problem is only when recording at 48 fps or higher.  But if you record at 4K 30 fps you can down sample that to 1080p 30 fps without any image or moiré issues.
So the takeaway from this is if you want to record 60 fps or higher footage then it's best to stick with the Phantom 4.

I just checked the specs on the Mavic Sensor (Sony IMX377) and it does support 4k (3840x2160) 60 fps.  So maybe they've limited it to 30 fps because there isn't enough onboard CPU power to run 4k 60 fps?

DJI need to change the spec sheet then. You cant sell a product claiming it does a feature if it doesn't.

The H.264 CODEC is the suspected bottleneck @ 4k60p.  I was super bummed when the Mavic specs came out & didn't include HEVC (H.265), which is perfect for 4k framerates AND bitrates.  A H.264 4k60p filesize would be ridiculously large, as well.

This is what the filmmaker said about the video:
The quality of the video after I render is great but once I upload them they look horrible at 1080p.
you should keep in mind a one thing, once uploaded to youtube, your videos will never look as good as the source. This is because youtube transcodes your videos into relatively low-bitrate streams. So you will inevitably suffer quality loss, no matter what you do.

So, the video was corrected / retouched ?

hi,

thx for explain but i was already clear in this
youtube renderer is optimized to protect bandwidth not to max quality ;D

is it possible for DJI to update the H.264 codec simply by software or is this hardware based?

sry, for sure i can searce the internet about this question but i think in case of the mavic its better to ask the  question here.

I think these aliasing effects and moire patterns are more apparent in certain circumstances than others. The video that was linked first made it more apparent while in the latter it isn't explicitly apparent.

I've lost count of how many times I've read/heard that the Mavic has the P4 sensor. This is the first time I've heard otherwise. Other footage doesn't look bad. The city footage, with all the horizontal and vertical lines, will really bring out the worst with a binned image.

I'll see how it goes. Hopefully when filming more active shots it won't be as noticeable. The P4 peaked my interest when I saw it and I was very impressed when I flew it, but it's a bit too large. I was sold on the Mavic from first sight.

I'm putting some serious thought in to getting the P4 instead of the Mavic. Am I right in thinking the P4 doesn't suffer this binning issue?

Also, I have a tablet, but it's running Windows 10. I there a DJI Go app or equivalent for Windows?

I think the latency is lower doing it this way, which is a major factor with FPV. I've read it's a limitation of the codec, not the sensor. I don't know if that means it'll be sortable in the future or not.

A choice between 1080p60 binned and 1080p60 downscaled from 4k would be nice. The latter takes a lot more processing, but the P4 seems able to do it.
