How do you get this to work? In the manual it talks about it being automatic if you take off to 10m but my gimbal is always facing to the horizon so doesn't record the view below for the mode to work.

Its the downward facing camera/sensors that take the image of the takeoff site..

The two vision sensing cameras underneath the mavic are the precision landing cameras, not the gimbal camera. just take off slowly and it will take a number of images to use as a reference when landing. you will not notice or see this happen.

In that case I'm not really seeing better than 1 foot of accuracy but I'll try and take off slower.

What are you landing on?

In order to obtain landing accuracy, the ground must be something distinct that it can use for comparison, like setting your carrying case next to where you take off from, or a landing pad with distinctive markings, or even a couple energy bars... Anything to provide contrast, as opposed to just dirt, grass, or concrete, where it all looks the same.

I posted this before, but... I just used some old spray paint on a 2x2 piece of carpet tile, and keep it in the trunk of my car for when I want to use it. It cost $3 to make, and provides a flat, soft landing for a drone. I don't actually have my Mavic yet, but it's great for other drones too.
