So I have the remote control.  All of my flying was done with my iPhone connected to the app.  I tried to do a little flying using just the remote and not the phone but I cannot get the drone to lift off!  It says connected on the display.  If I push up on the left stick nothing happens.  On the remote there is a button for Return to Home but where is the takeoff button?

Yes it is this is how you take off normally, left stick all the way down to shut off motors when you land,
Just one thing my advice is it is much safer to use phone and controller with app.
If you are using controller without app and phone make sure you keep it in sight,
If I picked you up wrong ignore.

In the manual on page 52

"Starting the Motors

A Combination Stick Command (CSC) is used to start the motors. Push both sticks to the bottom inner or outer corners to start the motors. Once the motors have started spinning, release both sticks simultaneously."



And Take Off is left stick forward (typo sorry - thnx hallmark) like your were trying. Just start the motors first.  After landing keep holding the left stick down for 3 sec to stop then motors again. You can also use the CSC command at this point but I found if not careful doing so can impart a roll on the aircraft. So stick held down is better.
