I was going to play with them Mavic today during lunch and I forgot to bring the charger to my office!  Can I plug the drone in via it's USB port with the battery in place and it will charge?

No, you cannot. The micro USB port on the Mavic is for data only, and lacks the amps to be able to charge a large battery. The battery must be removed, and attached directly to the charger, or to the charging hub, allowing it to serial charge up to 4 batteries, starting with the battery with the highest charge, to get you flying sooner. That hub is a smart design, just like the battery.

I'm sorry but I beg to differ. While charging the battery inside the drone may not be the best way, it does charge via the usb-c port. I will attach a short video clip of it charging. We'll...it won't upload my video for some reason , but trust me...it charges just fine.
