Looks like mine will have to go in for repair.  Tried to fly it and could barely get it in the air, and to make matters worse, DJI Go shows no flight log for today.

Just did THE Firmware update right out of The box. (New one under warranty.)
Specs :
P3-Standard Stock CE
Firmware 1.2.40
Samsung S5 neo Android 6
Orginal SD-card
DJI-GO app 2.9.1

Problems before:
Signal lost, no video, 50 meter up and 70 meter far...
RTH after 50 meter, etc,etc...
Now just upgrade to 1.7.90
No problem at all. the update take's about 10 /15 mnt
Update was very smooth,And the about page shows: 1.7.90
Hope i can on sunday do a short test. {It's raining all day.}

Yes.
The Go app writes the firmware to the Phantom after downloading to the SD-card.
After that the phantom starts to update.  See the LED @ the front of the Phantom.
blinking red and green.  some noises are normal

Yep, Every battery you have, must be updated.
Just put the battery in the phantom, and the phantom wil upgrade the battery. (The bin.file must be on the SD-card.) follow the instructions from the app.

Yes, I have done that scores of times.  
I believe the GO app is at fault and in reality, it has never matured for any particular mobile device operating system version, be it IOS or Android. Too many versions have been released and no reasonable amount of support is evident.

In my case, I never get the FW upgrade available banner displayed or the installed FW version listed in About page.

DJI needs to offer in-depth and fully comprehensible instructions for use in those cases where update notifications fail to appear and then offer alternative updating procedures.

I do agree that the upgrade by app is the simplest way to upgrade even for the tech challenged majority but the copy/paste scripts you and your associates offer are usually irreverent and a complete waste of time for those who are experiencing issues with their investment.

You don't have to redo the update with each battery, after the first update all you have to do is power down, put in another battery and power up with the new battery.

Boy I really screwed up!!!! Banner was on my Go app but it would not download so I decided to download the file on the SD card. Turned the bird on and it was beeping like crazy. I accidentally turned it off. When I turned it back on, I saw the camera light blinking like its supposed to on an update. It looks like it did an update, I get FPV BUT I cannot link to the controller. I've done the flipping of the S2 switch, trying to link via the Go app and nothing.....no signal and lights are flashing yellow......PLEASE HELP

Why is everyone so inpatient with this FW update. Just wait or figure out how to do it through the app, the way it's meant to be with the P3S. With you sir, try to redo the FW update, the right way via the app. Even if you have to uninstall the Go app, reinstall it then maybe your get the banner.

I've tried that but the signal is lost from the controller to the bird. I have video but no signal. I try linking through the Go app and it say linking complete but there is still no signal and flashing yellow lights.

Why do they make this soooo difficult!!! Lots of people having problems with this.....I should have just left the damn thing alone, it was working great.

@DJI Mindi or Natalia can you shed a helping hand here?

hey bro don't worry.. just downgrade the firmware to fix this ,and re upgrade again if you want.. just put 1.6.8 firmware bin file to a SD card, then turn OFF the remote, and put the SD card  in to the drone, and press and hold the aircraft linking button, (the button in the body) hold it and turn on the drone, do NOT let the button go until for 20 Seconds, and then release the button, it will trigger a complete firmware install. installing all the modules again. it will fix this,,,

I've tried that with the exception of turning off the remote and it has not helped. According to the txt file, I currently have 1.6.8 in the drone now.

are you sure that you are in 1.6.8 ?? or is it 1.6.8+        ???   if you are in 1.6.8, then put 1.5.7 firmware bin file and do the process I told you above..

no no no turn the Wi-Fi off if you're using a cell phone you need an internet connection for the app to detect the update if you're connected to the Drone you're not connected to the internet if you're not connected to the internet you will not see the update many people have said this and you keep saying the same thing maybe not you specifically but others

Okay the question I got as I have three batteries how do I know if they updated before it said something about the light should be green on the camera I restarted the Phantom after the update was successful with the second battery everything came up no complaints and the green light was on the camera

After update I flew several times without problems like I posted hear, but on the "about" page my version was N/A. Today morning I turn on my drone end... I did not do anything, just like magic, look what appeared in the application. (Samsung J5)

I get the same 1.6.8+ but after I reinstall Go app the version was N/A, I flew anyway without problem. Today morning after recharge the battery and turn on the drone the version appears!
You are already updated, look the hiden txt file on your SD!

Phantom 3 standard
Was on 1.5.7 when started to upgrade. First iv got 1.6.8 upgrade message but, this doesn't work via dji go app, so I put 1.6.8 to drone from ad card. Then iv got 1.7.9 upgrade message, did successfull upgrade via go app but then at about page saw 1.6.8+. And this problem I solved reinstalling go app and relink rc to drone. Now everything ok, but I can't test the "range issue" cause it's winter in Russia

Yeah, I wonder too. Someone wrote here that made upgrade 3 times cause have 3 batteries. So first I can't start upgrade process for new batteries, no upgrade message. So how start manually one more upgrade for other batteries. I think for standard all happens automatically for batteries. How it works? Who knows?

Well that didn't work, here is the message i get in the txt file

YET.. THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS .   TILL TODAY,, THERE IS NO P3S OWNER WHO HAD RANGE PROBLEMS WITH 1.6.8 UPDATE THAT NOW HAS BEEN RESOLVED.     4 PAGES AND NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO SAY .. Correct, exactly as I said. I did not say you had to re-do the update, just that you have to place each battery in the P3S, and start theP3S with the bin.file on the SD Card ......

Hi JPNL
Today I upgraded from 1.5.7 to 1.7.9 via Dji Go app.
Previously like many others I upgraded out of the box to 1.6.8 and ran into the problems many others have had.
I partly cured this by Down grading to 1.5.7 via SD card method, range went to 1100 ft @150ft before signal loss occured.
After upgrade to 1.7.9 via app I was still at 1600 ft @150ft and still going strong before returning to change batery.
After fitting 2nd battery I had message that battery requires upgrade and version was 1.6.8+
Waited for DJI Go to update battery,which it did not.
Formatted SD card and copied 1.7.9 to card and ran update from this method (you tube Shows how)
Both batterys now upgraded, app shows 1.7.9 and range was still going at 1640ft @ 159 ft before it started to rain in sunny scotland.

Note I live in Rural country side, and only fly drone over open fields.
        I use a Google Nexus 7 2013 for viewing, NO other apps/email etc loaded.
        I have disabled 5ghz Wifi detection in the Nexus 7, only 2.4 Ghz active.

Thanks for your reply.
I hope tomorrow I can make a test flight. We currently have scotland weather here. :-(
About the battery: I switch the battery after the update from the P3S. Start it all up, and after a few minutes the P3S shows the updated banner for a battery update.
Just the way you say. And yes the bin.file must be on the SD card.

Just did my update. Everything went smoothly. I didn't have range issue before but my video quality was getting worse by the flight. I figured it was caused by interference. Lots of wifi signals around I'm sure. I did my first flight this evening after the upgrade. Everything went fine and no problems at all with video. Hopefully it stays that way...
