The tutorial says to upgrade Mavic firmware with DJI assistant. But I just did it with the phone connected to the controller. What's the benefit of using DJI Assistant?

Thy are two option for the update.
Personally, I think it's more convenient to do the upgrade by DJI GO app.
Sometimes if the update failed, you could choose the other method to update it again.

In DJI assistant, you have the option to update firmware for the aircraft and/or the controller. DJI Go has no option. I hope it updates everything (aircraft, controller, battery). Is that correct?

I couldn't update using DJI assistant on a mac either, I had to use the iOS app

You have upgraded it successfully through APP, right?
When doing that with Assistant 2, any error message popping out? what's percentage it went?

I was able to upgrade using app the first time but it didn't have tripod mode. I tried refreshing the firmware to bring back tripod mode but Assistant app on Mac OS Sierra hangs at 0%.

I downgraded using assistant app on old PC and then upgraded again using the iOS app.

After upgrade it to the latest, please click on the icon under "Smart RTH" at the left side of screen, you will find tripod mode.

Just updated Mavic Pro successfully with DJI Assistant.
