If it isn't as noisy as X5R is then it is MUCH better! Will wait and see.

Doesn't really matter as a comparison. You can't switch between the two on the same bird.
It's a case of I1 vs I2, and that's a much bigger debate.

It does matter because why else would someone upgrade from using the X5R to using the X5S?

My point being that because there isn't any backwards compatibility between the I1 and I2 - the comparison is actually between the I1 / X5R and the I2 / X5S.

That takes many other factors into the mix, as well as the basic IQ aspects.

It's not a question of upgrading a camera as such, its a question of "do I replace my current bird or not?"

I'll ask this again, can the X5R not produce ProRes in post? Is it just the in-camera processing to ProRes that is new in the X5S?

X5R cannot capture ProRes. It can shoot RAW, and use Cinelight to convert the file to ProRes format.
But X5S can capture ProRes directly.

I think you have to purchase the keys to use ProRes and Cinema DNG which is another £1500! so better add those to the bill as well as the big SSD card at £909 each oh and a reader for the PC at £159 wow this inspire 2 is going to cost £8K in no time.

I thought ProRes and Cinema DNG were open source?

Right, so both capture RAW - the only difference is that the X5S can do the ProRes conversion in-camera, whereas the X5R would need a computer...?

You can transcode h264 to prores also if you like, in post.
On board prores is not converted, it only records straight to prores, a raw compression if you like.
But what kind of raw format does the X5R shoot in, DNG?
