I've been using an ipad mini 1 (the original) with my mavic. It works fine except the video is behind the live action. When I rotate or am moving across ground especially the further away I get my video is a second or two behind the control imputs on RC. Does this also happen on mini 2 and mini 4 or is just my mini 1??(slow processor maybe)

What is it about the mini 4 that makes it too big?  As far as I know, it is actually smaller (certainly thinner) than the iPAD Mini 1.  Can you explain?

I did a little looking and it DOES appear it actually grew a little.  Strange.  Anyone know first-hand what versions will fit?  I was thinking about a dedicated iPad for it.

It fits just fine.  Just need a shorter (8") USB cable to make it a clean looking setup.

RE: ipad mini 2 or mini 4 with mavic

Hi CaptainET,

All ipad mini's will fit, the 1 is to slow, the 2 has the A7 processor (better), the 3 an A7 (same as the 2) and the 4 an A8 (best) witch will mean less lag.
The question is how much do you want to shell out for less lag!

I'm going for the 4 so ios updates are not a problem in the near future.

Just my 2 cents,

we've been using a mini 2 and it works just fine.  Now all we need is a right angle on the lighting connector side.

I sure don't like the lag on the mini 1, so best bet is probably to go for a 4.  Have the guys using the 2 or 3 getting any lag?  btw, i got a 6 inch cable from best buy and it fits perfect, but could use one with the 90 degree turn

I didn't even think the original ipad mini was compatible.  I'm using the ipad mini 2. I get about a half second lag which must be typical from most tablets.  See this youtube video. It is NOT an iPad mini 2, but demonstrates pretty well what I am seeing.  I really don't notice the lag much at all. See this video at 1:30 ...

Do you need more than 16gb on the Ipad Mini?

Hi Ken
I was reading this thread and decided to look at fitting my mini 2 or mini 4. Not sure how you guys are doing this, because neither my mini 2 or 4 will not fit horizontally (like using it on my inspire 1).

I really do not want to force the fit and even if you could get the top corner of the iPad to fit.... I would like flying it that way.  Sorry do not want to appear negative on this idea but it's not for me...

Sorry Rich,
I was talking about the functionality of the Mini 3, not the fit in the Mavic holder.
But I still can fit it in, it's not a great fit at all and I wouldn't use it without a aftermarket holder.

Okay thanks Ken

I agree regarding the fit. The other consideration is  (when the sun returns in the west) the hood needed would be in a very odd position.
PS did you finally get your Mavic?  Love flying this thing!  Now just need to find some buyers for my other drones so I can order the I2

That's great news Ken...  Have you calibrated the IMU after completing the FW updates. It is definitely different procedure that the other products!  I cannot figure a fast way to do (race car pit stop method)

Mini 4 fits perfectly well and operates without any lag. It's perfect!

I use an 8" right-angle lead from the full-size USB under the controller. You just have to make sure you unplug the short lead from the mini-USB on the left, or it won't connect to the Drone (trust me....)

I calibrated one a few months ago at work, and yes a very different procedure.
This one is flying absolutely perfectly, so I won't be doing an IMU calibration.

That's correct, a few firmware versions ago they made it so the side has to be unplugged if using the bottom port.

I was wondering if I need to do the IMU because of all the FW updates. It was a good idea to do this on the Inspire 1. So far, I have not seen any issues after updating. The AF is a bit much .. I can always put it in manual though.

PS I sent you a friend  request in case PM's are needed in the future.

I can't seem to find it again, but I seem to recall some forum mumbling about a controller change that was made at some point so that the right arm didn't push the sport mode button, and some guy had to dremel out the controller to get the mini 4 to fit?  I purchased in the last month, maybe I got one of those controllers.

Thanks for the replies here, folks.  Indeed, the iPad Mini 4 fits perfectly, and it's as smooth as butter to operate during flight.  I'm not an Apple fan, but if this is what it takes to get some solid flight control, then so be it.

I am certainly with you on that !  i am not an apple fanboy either,  my mini 4, cellular , 16gb is for my Mavic   only !  it fits tight and secure as any phone i have used,  and runs as smooth as butter !  and hasnt failled yet on the mavic,  and thats good coming from an apple hater! Ha ha.  my android devices have had all sorts of issues,  to be fair though the Motorola Play X was nearly perfect ( other than being thicker one end than the other, i had to take out one of the rubber grippers and temporarily replace it with some slim rubber piece i had laying around).

Yes - there are so many folks complaining here in the forum, but I have to admit, even with the issues here and there the last month or two has been just amazing to me as a new pilot.  What a fantastic device these folks have created!

Mini 2 was laggy sometimes so I upgraded.

Ipad mini 4 with 8" right angle cable. This thing was designed to do this. I just push it in and voila. Holds extremely well. Can grip the handles on remote. I like it.
Although close the sport button is not blocked. I can flip it on with thumbnail easily.

First, no need to yell (all caps), second - yes it does fit. I have two iPad Mini 4's, one for my Mavic and one for my Spark, fly both of them pretty much every day and the Mini 4's fit perfectly.

the iPad mini 4 does fit... just takes force to fit iPad mini 2 , 3, 4 into it....

as for which is better.. iPad mini 4 vs iPad mini 2..   iPad mini 4 has a better faster SoC and better screen... but..iPad mini 2 is very cheap used ..i got one for $140 32GB in refurbish condition
oops.. edited: i ment to say iPad mini 2 was so cheap.. not iPad mini 4.. ipad mini 4 is still pricy..

Yeah, it does fit.  Perfectly in fact.  You just have to open the arms as wide as they will go, then slide in straight.  If you slide in one side ahead of the other, you will have a fit fight on your hands.

I picked up a 128gb iPad mini 4 at Best Buy for $280 (plus tax) and use it as a dedicated display, replacing my iPhone 6.  I will never go back to anything else.  Its perfect.....

i noticed some lag with my mini 2 on dji go 4.1.9 (latest update) if i allow it to cache videos.... if i disable caching then its silky smooth.  so my settings basically no caching of anything in app and the avg lag i seen is very typical of occusync, so about 150ms...  pretty much the same as my GF';s iPad pro does for lag.

so tip for people running older devices.. disable caching, clear cache and restart the app. i guess this will be a thing until dji fixes it or does something about it..

If you're recording in MP4 format try changing it to MOV. See this thread for more info: http://forum.dji.com/thread-108776-1-1.html

will try this later today!  i have also found another oddity, i have litchi (i dont use very much) but in litchi i can disable "hardware acceleration"  ti seems to save that setting to the aircraft or something because then i close out litchi and open up Dji go 4 and and input lag is nearly halved from camera to screen processing.. before it felt like maybe 1/4 second now it feels like about 1/8th second.    i know Dji Go 4 used to have a toggle in settings for hardware acceleration and used to be a glitch with the apple A7 cpus, i wonder if that's still occurring.  i havent tested out if its improving my battery life or anything with my iPad mini 2 or anything yet.  but i think it has helped...
