Military has been doing a lot of funny GPS stuff lately with offsets and turning it off at times.  Check your FAA notices for upcoming NOTAMs like this one today that will encompass a 224 nm radius at 50' up from the Groom Lake area in Nevada:

I had one from China Lake Naval Weapons Station not too long ago too.  Commercial pilots may request ATC radar vectoring.

You shouldn't lose GPS unless you fly under cover or you have a bad compass calibration.
A GPS malfunction is extremely rare.

If you lose GPS for any of the reasons above your Phantom does not know where it is and cannot navigate to anywhere.

If you are simply flying in atti mode and sattelites are available, on losing control signal, RTH is initiated and the Phantom would use GPS to RTH.

The Feds can interrupt GPS for security reasons. Typically, a NOTAM will be issued if a VIP such as the President is in a location. This way any weapon targeting system relying on GPS would have a tough time with it. As a retired ATC'er, I've seen this more times than I can count.

Yes, they issue NOTAMs for VIP movement.
But have you seen them turn off GPS for that as well?
I've never heard of that and it sounds quite unlikely.

Those asking the questions are not in the USA so they'll never see such a thing anyway.

And in any event, the GLONAS system would still be up and running. The Russians don't turn that off when Obama is on the move.

Aloha fans6,

No, the Phantom RTH function needs GPS / GLONASS to work.

I have flown during these events well within the inner radius and never noticed anything out of the ordinary. I've been told the actual testing is a very short duration even though the NOTAN says it could last the entire time.

Always expect the worst and have a plan.
