My P4P is flying great.  When I start up it wants a compass calibration so rotate 360 horizontal and no problem, it moves to vertical.  It never works on vertical, I can spin it till the cows come home until I just cancel.  I then just move it 10 feet away and it doesn't need compass calibration and I can fly.  
Any tips?

Look at the place where you are getting the message about calibration required.
You would get the same symptoms if you tried to launch from your car roof and then moved away from the car.
It sounds like there is a distorted magnetic field there but not 10 feet away.
Is there some steel nearby? Maybe reinforced concrete?
Don't launch from anywhere close to a lot of steel.
